Raffles Singapore bartender Ngiam Tong Boon is credited for creating the Singapore Sling. While men were allowed to drink alcohol openly in public in 1915, etiquette dictated that women be more ladylike and choose fruit juice or tea. So Boon mixed together this cherry brandy, grenadine, orange, Cointreau, Dom Benedictine and lime juice cocktail topped with a flower in the Long Bar in 1915. No trip to Singapore is complete without tasting it.
This cognac, champagne and crème de fraise de bois confection topped with a tropical flower was first created by the Hotel Le Royal’s Elephant Bar when Jackie Kennedy visited Cambodia. It was designed to match the colour of the First Lady’s lipstick. The hotel is said to still have the glass she drank it from, complete with a red lipstick mark.
It was the Ritz-Paris's first head bartender who was said to have created the Sidecar in Bar Hemingway 1923. He combined Cointreau, lemon juice and a rare cognac for a wealthy American guest. Head barmen Colin Peter Field updated it in 2001 with a champagne cognac and was listed as the most expensive cocktail in the world, priced USD1,500.
