Six Senses Bumthang

Gangtey, Bumthang & Beyond

Tucked within a serene pine forest in Bhutan’s spiritual heartland, at an altitude of 2,700m, Six Senses Bumthang offers a tranquil retreat that harmoniously blends luxury with nature. Known as the “Forest within a Forest,” this eco-conscious lodge invites guests to immerse themselves in the rich cultural tapestry and pristine landscapes of the Jakar Valley - one of the most remote and off-grid regions of this magical Himalayan country.

Accommodation

The lodge features eight thoughtfully designed suites and one two-bedroom villa, each crafted with natural timber and expansive floor-to-ceiling windows that frame panoramic forest vistas. Embracing the concept of bringing the outdoors in, each suite includes a private courtyard with a tree planted at its centre, creating a seamless connection to the surrounding woodland. Interiors are minimalist yet warm, featuring traditional wood-burning bukhari stoves and organic furnishings that reflect Bhutanese craftsmanship.

Food & Drink

Dining at Six Senses Bumthang celebrates Bhutan’s culinary heritage through the “Eat With Six Senses” philosophy. Menus are crafted using fresh, seasonal ingredients sourced from local farms and the lodge’s organic gardens. Guests can enjoy unique experiences such as riverside picnics, where chefs prepare fresh fish on heated river stones over woodsmoke, set against the backdrop of a clear, fast-flowing river.

Sustainability

Sustainability is integral to the Six Senses philosophy, aligning with Bhutan's commitment to environmental preservation. Efforts include meticulous management of energy, water, waste, and chemical usage, as well as active engagement with local communities. The lodge's practices reflect Bhutan's status as the world's only carbon-negative country, ensuring that guests' stays contribute positively to the environment and society.

Experiences

Six Senses Bumthang offers a range of immersive experiences that connect guests to the region's rich cultural and natural heritage. Activities include guided hikes to ancient monasteries such as Tamzhing Lhundrup Lhakhang, visits to sacred sites like the Burning Lake (Mebar Tsho), and explorations of local villages. Guests can also engage in traditional Bhutanese practices, such as lighting butter lamps or participating in archery lessons, providing a deeper understanding of the local way of life.

Why we recommend Six Senses Bumthang

Small and remote, surrounded by forest and set beside a stream, this lodge is beautifully quiet, with large suites featuring wood-burning stoves and forest-view terraces. It feels totally off-grid - you'll see very few, if any, fellow tourists in Bumthang. This is the sort of place where the world slows down. You’re surrounded by nature, tradition, and quiet. And Six Senses manages to deliver comfort without disrupting any of it.
