Discover Bhutan with COMO Hotels

Written by Lightfoot Travel

Experience the slow rhythm of Bhutan, the last Himalayan Kingdom, with COMO Hotels by Lightfoot Travel.

If you are considering a meaningful, nature-led holiday for 2026, Bhutan is one of the most rewarding destinations in the Himalayas.

Known for its “high-value, low-impact” travel philosophy and spectacular mountain landscapes, the Kingdom of Bhutan has held on to a sense of identity that is increasingly hard to find today. It is also home to two of COMO’s most thoughtfully designed lodges, COMO Uma Paro and COMO Uma Punakha, which pair beautifully for a twin-valley itinerary.

Lightfoot Travel curates tailormade Bhutan holidays that combine guided hiking, wellness, and cultural encounters with exceptional accommodation at COMO hotels.

For 2026, Bhutan aligns perfectly with several of Lightfoot’s global travel trends: a rise in solo journeys, a renewed interest in slow, nature-first travel, and more appetite for destinations that feel grounding and purposeful. Bhutan offers all of this, coupled with exceptional hospitality and accommodation that Lightfoot guests will appreciate.

Valleys remain quiet, temples feel connected to the communities, and nature is not only a backdrop but weaved into all aspects of daily life.

For those looking to slow down, travel with intention, and experience a culture shaped by spirituality and deep respect for the natural world, Bhutan delivers an extraordinary sense of renewal. Travelling in 2026 also means excellent availability if booked early, especially for peak spring and autumn seasons when COMO’s lodges fill quickly.

Why Travel to Bhutan in 2026

Best Time to Visit Bhutan

Bhutan continues to attract travellers who appreciate slow and meaningful travel encounters. Visitor numbers are carefully managed through the Sustainable Development Fee, ensuring the country remains unspoilt and its culture well-protected. The result is a destination that remains unspoilt and remarkably genuine.

Spring (March to May) is one of the most rewarding times to visit Bhutan. The air is fresh, skies are clear and the hillsides fill with blooming rhododendrons. It is also festival season, with Paro Tshechu and the Rhododendron Festival offering a vivid insight into Bhutanese culture through dance, music and centuries-old tradition.

Autumn (September to November) brings equally appealing conditions, with warm days, bright light and excellent visibility across the Himalayas. This is the classic trekking season, when valleys are at their most vibrant and monasteries feel especially atmospheric.

Winter (December to February) is colder, but beautifully quiet. Days are crisp and often crystal clear, with snow-dusted peaks and a softer pace that many of our clients enjoy. It is an excellent time for photography, reflection and slow travel, with both COMO properties offering warm hospitality and thoughtful wellness after days spent outdoors.

COMO Uma Paro and COMO Uma Punakha are two boutique lodges that act as luxurious bases for authentic exploration and deliver exceptional Bhutanese hospitality to Lightfoot clients. The two properties complement each other effortlessly: Paro’s alpine drama followed by Punakha’s tropical like vegetation.

Experiencing both lodges offers two perspectives on Bhutan. This is Bhutan at its most personal, with itineraries created by Lightfoot and anchored by COMO’s thoughtful approach to wellness, design and hospitality.

A Seamless Two-Valley Itinerary with COMO Bhutan

Como Uma Paro Exterior

COMO Uma Paro - At the Heart of a Himalayan Kingdom

COMO Uma Paro is often the first stop on a Bhutan itinerary. Set on a forested hillside overlooking the Paro Valley, the lodge combines Bhutanese craftsmanship with COMO’s understated design and wellness philosophy. It is an ideal base for acclimatisation. Guided walks lead to monasteries, temples and hidden viewpoints, while mountain-biking routes weave through pine forest. Cultural experiences can include artisan workshops, archery sessions, traditional prayer-flag printing or photography excursions around Paro Dzong. In April 2026, guests can join Leica ambassador and travel photographer, Christina Tan, on a special 6-day photography journey, capturing Bhutan through the lens.

For panoramic views, Lightfoot can arrange a drive up to Chele La Pass, with views of Bhutan's second highest-peak, Mt. Jhomolhari (7,314m) before embarking on the classic hike to Tiger’s Nest once guests are fully acclimatised. After days outdoors, COMO Shambhala offers restorative therapies such as yoga, massage, Ayurvedic treatments and Bhutanese hot-stone baths, followed by dinner at Bukhari with a menu rooted in seasonal valley produce.

COMO Uma Punakha Exterior View

After Paro, a scenic drive via the Dochula Pass brings you into the gentler, more tropical, landscapes of Punakha. Terraced fields, orange groves and the winding Mo Chhu River set the tone for slower days.

COMO Uma Punakha is a more intimate lodge, with only a handful of suites perched above a wide river bend. Every room here offers sweeping views of the lush Punakha Valley and My Chhu as it winds its way through the valley bottom. Activities include guided rafting, walking trails to village chortens, visits to Punakha Dzong and the iconic Chimi Lhakhang (Temple of Fertility), as well as gentle cycling routes through the valley. Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorte is an easy walk away, and the lodge arranges riverside picnics, white-water rafting experiences and sunset walks along the banks of the Mo Chhu.

Wellness continues at COMO Punakha. Rejuvenate both body and spirit with carefully selected treatments and holistic wellness packages at the COMO Shambhala Spa. Stretching sessions and traditional Bhutanese rituals help guests unwind fully after a day of activity and adventure.

Dining is simple yet delicious at both properties. Named after the traditional Bhutanese fireplace, Bukhari is the warm heart of both COMO Uma Paro and COMO Uma Punakha. In both properties it offers a cosy, convivial restaurant serving produce from the local valleys. The food is seasonally inspired, healthy, wholesome and full of flavour.

Tailormade the Lightfoot Way

No two journeys in Bhutan should feel the same. That is the beauty of the destination and the reason we encourage a tailormade approach. Bhutan is best explored at an unhurried pace.

A ten-night journey offers an ideal balance of acclimatisation, culture and wellness. Travellers typically begin with three nights in Paro, easing into the altitude with gentle hikes, monastery visits and restorative sessions at COMO Shambhala. The journey continues to Punakha for five nights, where days unfold along rivers and rice fields, with visits to Punakha Dzong, leisurely cycling, more challenging hikes, hot-stone baths and moments of stillness by the Mo Chhu. The finale takes place back in Paro for two final nights, timed for the ascent to Tiger’s Nest, Bhutan’s most iconic pilgrimage. Approaching the monastery after a week of acclimatisation transforms the experience into a rewarding, spiritual end to the journey.

For solo travellers, COMO’s expert guides and dedicated drivers offer both security and flexibility. Couples and families will appreciate the space, the calm and the ability to move at an easy pace between properties, with plenty (or fewer if you wish) excursions included along the way.

COMO’s wellness philosophy blends naturally with Bhutan’s own focus on balance and simplicity. Wellness here is inspired by both the Bhutanese landscape and the local customs and traditions. It is this combination that makes it feel so restorative.

Enjoy mindful hikes through pine forests, breathing sessions overlooking terraced fields, nourishing meals that draw from local farms, and the gentle influence of Bhutanese traditions, from hot-stone baths to monastery blessings. For travellers who want both adventure and restoration, this balance is one of Bhutan’s greatest appeals.

Why we Love Bhutan

Bhutan sits firmly on Lightfoot’s list of destinations that change the way you travel. It is authentic, spiritual and deeply connected to the natural world.

Lightfoot’s fondness for Bhutan is rooted in what the country offers our guests in real, tangible terms. It comes from years of sending clients and spending time there ourselves, seeing the effect the country has on people. Whether you are travelling solo, with a partner or as a small group, our guests return from Bhutan not only with photographs of dramatic valleys and monasteries, but with a deeper appreciation of time, place and perspective. It is why we take such pride in planning journeys that allow our clients to experience the country in a thoughtful and memorable way.

Tiger's Nest Bhutan

Peak availability at COMO Uma Paro and COMO Uma Punakha falls in spring and autumn, both of which book out early due to limited room numbers and tightly managed entry requirements.

If you are considering Bhutan for 2026, we recommend planning several months ahead to secure the best guides, timings and festival dates.
