The Malkai, Oman

Oman

The Malkai invites travellers on a journey through Oman, unfolding across three distinct landscapes: the coastal farmlands of Barkaa, the Al Hajar Mountains, and the dunes of Sharqiyah Sands. At The Malkai, guests are encouraged to relax and embrace the best of Omani life, whether trekking mountain wadis, snorkelling in protected marine reserves, or learning the ancient art of date farming. Each moment is shaped by a personal Murshid – a guide and storyteller – who ensures your trip is tailored to your individual interests and pace.

Accommodation

Across all three sites, The Malkai offers 45 Pavilion Suites in total, with 15 at each location. Drawing inspiration from traditional Bedouin tents, the spacious pavilions blend traditional and contemporary luxury. Each 85-square-metre suite features a separate bedroom and bathroom pavilion, expansive outdoor terraces, and interiors created from locally sourced materials. One- and three-bedroom configurations are available, with the latter offering a private plunge pool, ideal for families or small groups.

Food & Drink

The Malkai's culinary philosophy centres on farm-to-fork dining, with menus created according to the seasons and the land. Each location's landscaping includes productive gardens planted with lime, mango, guava, and aromatic herbs, providing fresh ingredients year-round. Guests enjoy authentic Omani cuisine prepared with locally sourced produce, from coastal seafood to mountain-grown almonds.

Experiences

The Malkai's three locations offer different perspectives of Oman. At Barkaa, guests have access to a private island in the Al Dimaniyat Archipelago, a UNESCO-protected marine reserve renowned for coral reefs, nesting turtles, and migrating whale sharks. In the Al Hajar Mountains, experiences include dawn goat walks with herders, wadi hikes, and guided star safaris. The Sharqiyah Sands offer full desert immersion: dune driving in fully equipped Defender 110s, sunrise hot air balloon flights, and evenings stargazing.

Children

While there is no dedicated children's club, The Malkai offers two- and three-bedroom options suitable for families, alongside many experiences that children can participate in.

Best Time to Visit

Oman's most temperate weather falls between October and April, when cooler temperatures and clear skies create ideal conditions for outdoor activities. The summer months (May to September) bring heat and humidity, particularly along the coast, though the mountains are cooler.

How to Get There

Barkaa, the starting point of The Malkai journey, lies approximately 30 minutes from Muscat International Airport.
