Kumu Beach

Southern Beaches , Sri Lanka

Kumu Beach is a peaceful hideaway on Sri Lanka’s southwest coast, offering understated luxury and warm, family-friendly hospitality. With just 10 stylish rooms facing the Indian Ocean, it’s an ideal setting for those seeking tranquillity and comfort on their luxury holidays to Sri Lanka. Days can be spent exploring nearby mangroves by boat, cycling coastal trails, or diving into the coral-rich waters of Weligama and Hikkaduwa. For a dose of culture, visit the historic Galle Fort or the iconic gardens of Geoffrey and Bevis Bawa.

Accommodation

Kumu Beach features 10 bedrooms, including four luxurious suites. All rooms offer views of the pool and garden, with sweeping vistas of the Indian Ocean. Each room is furnished with custom-designed beds and stylish décor inspired by sunset pinks and ocean blues.

Food & Drink

Dining at Kumu Beach is a relaxed yet refined affair, with fresh, flavourful dishes served against a backdrop of uninterrupted sea views. From king coconut cocktails at the bar to candlelit dinners, menus celebrate the island’s seasonal bounty, think sesame-crusted yellowfin tuna and vibrant Sri Lankan curries. Alongside local specialities, guests can enjoy Western favourites, light salads, and snacks throughout the day.

Activities

Kumu Beach is perfectly placed for exploring the highlights of Sri Lanka’s southwest coast, from the quiet sands of Balapitiya Beach to the artisan town of Ambalangoda and the turtle hatcheries of Kosgoda. Within easy reach are the water sports of Bentota Lagoon, Geoffrey Bawa’s iconic Lunuganga estate, and the colonial charm of UNESCO-listed Galle Fort.

Sustainability

Kumu Beach has ongoing projects supporting local communities in and around the property. These projects range from sourcing fresh produce directly from local fishermen and farmers to engaging in beach clean-ups and hosting special events at orphanages.

Children

Children are greeted at Kumu Beach with various activities, from sandcastle building to plenty of pool time and experiences beyond the hotel, which are suitable for all ages.

How to get there

Balapitiya is a two-hour drive from Colombo’s international airport and is best accessed by car. The train from Colombo to Balapitiya is a scenic way to see the coast and takes a little over two hours (express), albeit prone to delays. Galle’s 17th-century Dutch fort is just 50 minutes away by road.
