Huab Under Canvas is nestled in a grove of Mopane trees on the banks of a tributary of the Huab River in the heart of Damaraland, Namibia. Protected from the prevailing winds and sun, the camp is virtually invisible and it carries arguably the lowest environmental footprint of any camp in Namibia.
While comfortable and well-appointed, the emphasis here is upon an exclusive, back-to-basics wilderness experience. Eight tents are raised on mobile platforms and have a basic infrastructure including single beds, cupboards, solar power and comforts such as en suite flush toilets and bucket showers.
Wooden decks and walkways lead between the tents and the shared areas comprise a lounge with sofas and armchairs, a large deck with excellent views and sun-loungers arranged around a fire. There’s also a communal dining area serving hot breakfasts and three-course dinners.
The emphasis at Huab Under Canvas is on rhino tracking and the camp employs ‘Rhino Rangers’, who track the animals by foot. Nature walks, hiking trails and drives are also available, with other wildlife including desert elephant.
Location & Getting There
Huab Under Canvas is located in the Huab Conservancy, one of the heartlands of Namibia’s desert-adapted elephant and black rhino. The capital Windhoek is about an eight-hour drive away.
Accommodation
There are eight tents at Huab Under Canvas, all Meru canvas structures with cut-out windows and wooden floors. Each is of a decent size and includes twin beds as well as an en suite bathroom with hot bucket showers, a flush toilet and a wash-area with sink and mirror.
Activities
Safari! The area is largely sparsesemi-arid mountainous savanna, with wooded ephemeral river valleys separating hills and plains and it boasts some of the most magnificent views in Damaraland. As it has a number of natural springs providing
water throughout the year for desert-adapted wildlife, the area is home to desert-adapted elephant, black rhino and general plains game, including kudu, giraffe, springbok, oryx, klipspringer and steenbok, as well as predators such as cheetah, leopard, spotted and brown hyena.
Children
There are two family tents at Huab Under Canvas and this would be a fantastic place to bring adventurous teenagers, but perhaps not very young children.
Huanib Under Canvas, Damaraland, Namibia
Huab Under Canvas is an exclusive semi-permanent tented camp located in the Huab Conservancy of Namibia’s Damaraland. This is a remote and unique area, and an ideal base for black rhino or elephant tracking in an exclusive and authentic environment. This seasonal camp focuses on a no-frills wilderness experience, with an emphasis on great guiding; it also has an ultra-low-impact approach, and is hugely involved with conservation authorities in helping to safeguard the local rhino population.
