Photographer and National Geographic contributor Pascal Mannaerts travelled deep into the remote Ulaan Taiga region of northern Mongolia to document the lives of the Tsaatan – a reindeer-herding community that has lived in this isolated landscape for thousands of years.
The Tsaatan move their reindeer between five and ten times a year, following cooler plains where the animals can graze. Every part of the reindeer is essential to daily life: the hair is used for clothing, the milk for cheese, and the dung for fuel.
Today, their numbers have dwindled to around 40 families, due to a combination of interbreeding and illness within the herds. With their traditional way of life under increasing pressure, Pascal set out to capture a culture that may one day disappear entirely.
