Hiking Sri Lanka's Pekoe Trail
This ten-day itinerary follows the beautiful Pekoe Trail, taking you off the beaten path into Sri Lanka’s Central Highlands. The Pekoe Trail is a newly developed long-distance walking route spanning over 300km, designed to showcase the cultural and natural diversity of the island’s Tea Country. Hike handpicked stages of this scenic route, winding past emerald plantations, remote villages and forested ridgelines. Then journey south to the coast, where Galle’s storied streets and golden beaches provide a restful end to your journey.

Day 1
ARRIVAL COLOMBO
Upon arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport, you’ll be welcomed by your private chauffeur-guide and transferred to your hotel just outside Colombo. Settle into the serene gardens of The Wallawwa, where you can unwind by the pool or enjoy a spa treatment.
Day 2
TO THE HILL COUNTRY
This morning, journey inland towards the cool, misty hills of Hatton – Sri Lanka’s tea heartland. As you ascend through jungle and hillside, watch the scenery change from tropical lowlands to rolling green plantations. Check in to your Ceylon Tea Trails bungalow and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.
Day 3
HIKE & TEA IMMERSION
Begin your adventure on the Pekoe Trail with Stage 7, a 16km journey through villages, temples, and working farmland – offering a glimpse into the cultural fabric of the Hill Country. In the afternoon, visit a local tea factory to witness the art of Ceylon tea production from leaf to cup.
Day 4
VIEWS & VERDANT TRAILS
Today’s hike follows Stage 8 of the Pekoe Trail, winding 15.8km through lush gardens, forest paths, and tea estates, offering deeply scenic views across the hills. Return to your bungalow and spend the afternoon as you please – perhaps with a book on the veranda.
Day 5
THE JOURNEY TO ELLA
Drive southeast to the hills above Ella. Alternatively, you may opt for a scenic train journey from Hatton to Ella or Demodara – a classic experience with views of the Nine Arch Bridge and famed Demodara loop. On arrival, check into Nine Skies, perched on a tea-fringed ridge, and relax into your new surroundings.
Day 6
FOREST & VILLAGE WALKS
Continue your exploration with Pekoe Trail Stage 16, a 11–12km walk that begins with a short climb before continuing through forest, tea estates and villages. The afternoon is yours to relax.
Day 7
FINAL HILL COUNTRY WALK
Embark on your final leg of the Pekoe Trail with Stage 17, another 11–12km through quiet forest, tea plantations and small villages. Enjoy your final afternoon in the hills at your own pace.
Day 8
TO GALLE AND THE COAST
Descend from the hills to the southern coastline, where the air turns salty and the colours grow warmer. After the 4-hour transfer, you’ll arrive at your boutique retreat near Galle. The rest of the day is at leisure – relax by the pool or take a walk along the beach.
Day 9
GALLE FORT & RELAXATION
Today is yours to explore the atmospheric streets of Galle Fort, where Dutch-era architecture is home to cafés, artisan shops, galleries and restaurants. Return to your hotel for a final dip in the sea or a sunset stroll along the shore.
Day 10
DEPARTURE
Your driver will take you to the airport for your flight. We recommend arriving at least 2.5 hours before departure.
