Moments from Mongolia: A Photo Journal by a Lightfoot Client

Written by Lightfoot Travel

This story was produced by the Lightfoot Travel team in collaboration with our clients, who generously shared their experiences and photographs from a remarkable journey across Mongolia.

Mongolia has a way of recalibrating your sense of time and space.

From the dramatic Altai Mountains to the dunes of Bayangobi, this 11-day itinerary was filled with moments of cultural connection and natural wonder that are so unique to Mongolia. Guided by Ichko and Alkona, and staying in remote exclusive luxury camps like Mandala Altai and Mandala Heartland, Eric and Wannapa immersed themselves in nomadic life – from learning eagle hunting traditions in the west to sharing meals and stories with nomadic host families.

This photo journal offers a window into that experience.

This journey begins with heartfelt introductions and shared smiles in front of a traditional ger, set against the dramatic steppe landscape.

Taken at a private camp in the Orkhon Valley, where guests stay in bell tents and spend time with local host families.

The Choijin Lama Temple complex in the capital, Ulaanbaatar, offers a contrasting look at Mongolia's religious architecture and urban culture.

Scenic picnic stops are built into the itinerary, offering time to relax and enjoy the landscapes between destinations.

Mandala Luxury Ger camp's location allows access to dunes, steppe, and mountain terrain in the Bayangobi region.

Private dining experiences are arranged in elegantly styled gers, often in remote and scenic settings.

In the Altai region, Kazakh eagle hunters maintain a centuries-old tradition of training golden eagles.

Guests have the opportunity to interact with the eagles under the guidance of experienced trainers.

Encounters with host families provide an authentic window into the lives of nomadic children.

On occasion, guests may be invited to assist with seasonal tasks such as dismantling or setting up a ger.

Guests are served regional cuisine, freshly prepared in the gers or mobile dining tents.

Horseback riding is integral to Mongolian culture and incredible horsemanship skills are often demonstrated during festivals and local encounters.

Demonstrations often include horseback handling and simulated hunts, illustrating the connection between rider and bird.
