Mandala Altai

Western Mongolia

Mandala Altai is a private ger camp located in a secluded valley in western Mongolia’s Altai Mountains. This region is home to Kazakh eagle hunters and Uriankhai archers and remains one of the country’s most culturally distinct areas. The camp provides exclusive accommodation alongside meaningful engagement with local families whose livelihoods are shaped by seasonal migration and livestock herding. Operated in close collaboration with surrounding communities, Mandala Altai offers travellers the opportunity to experience western Mongolia in a private and carefully arranged setting.

Accommodation

The camp consists of a private arrangement of traditional felt gers reserved entirely for your party. The master bedroom ger features painted wooden furnishings and handwoven textiles. An adjoining heated bathroom ger includes a shower, eco loo and organic amenities. Wood stoves provide warmth in cooler months. A separate Magic Ger serves as the dining and social space and can be adapted for relaxed evenings indoors. Lighting and charging are powered by solar energy.

Food & Drink

Menus draw on locally sourced meat, dairy and seasonal produce, reflecting the pastoral traditions of the Altai region. Meals are simple, well prepared and suited to active days outdoors. A selection of soft drinks, local beers and house wine is available. Staff are based near the camp and provide attentive yet unobtrusive service throughout your stay.

Experiences

Mandala Altai offers access to western Mongolia’s cultural traditions. Guests can spend time with Kazakh eagle hunters, learning about the training process and the role of the eagle within local heritage. Archery sessions with Uriankhai hosts provide further insight into regional identity. Seasonal migration experiences can also be arranged, allowing guests to accompany herding families as they move livestock between grazing areas. Horse riding and guided hikes in the surrounding mountains offer further exploration of the landscape. All experiences are privately arranged and tailored to your interests.

Children

Families are welcome, particularly those with older children comfortable with outdoor activity and travel in remote areas.

Best Time to Visit

June to early October provides the best conditions. September and early October are particularly rewarding in western Mongolia as eagle training intensifies and local festivals take place.

How to Get There

Guests fly from Ulaanbaatar to Ulgii or Khovd, followed by approximately one hour by road to the camp.
