Whichaway Camp

Antarctica

Hidden amongst Antarctica's frozen lakes, exposed rock formations and sculpted blue ice, Whichaway Camp offers one of the most exclusive ways to experience the White Continent. Operated by White Desert, the camp accommodates just 12 guests and combines extraordinary access to Antarctica's interior with a level of comfort rarely found this far south. Set beside a frozen freshwater lake, the camp occupies a striking location surrounded by dramatic ice formations and vast polar landscapes. Days are spent exploring ice caves, hiking across ancient glaciers, visiting scientific research stations and travelling deep into the continent in search of Emperor penguins. Back at camp, guests can relax in comfortable communal spaces, enjoy chef-prepared meals and take in the remarkable scenery that stretches in every direction. There is also the opportunity to unwind in the camp's sauna or take an invigorating cold plunge surrounded by Antarctica's extraordinary wilderness.

Accommodation

Accommodation is spread across six heated sleeping pods, each designed to provide privacy and comfort in one of the world's most remote destinations. Recently redesigned, the pods feature contemporary interiors alongside thoughtful touches that make a big difference in Antarctica's extreme environment. Each pod accommodates two guests and includes either twin or double beds, a writing desk, lounge seating, tea and coffee-making facilities, and an en-suite bathroom with shower. Floor-to-ceiling windows and private conservatories maximise views across the surrounding ice, while electric blankets and hot water bottles provide extra comfort after a day of exploration. The camp can also be booked exclusively for private groups and celebrations.

Food & Drink

Dining is a memorable part of the Whichaway experience. Meals are prepared by the camp's chefs using fresh ingredients flown into Antarctica throughout the season and served in the welcoming communal dining area. Expect hearty breakfasts before setting out on daily excursions, relaxed lunches in camp or out on the ice, and multi-course dinners accompanied by carefully selected wines. Weather permitting, guests may also enjoy unforgettable picnic lunches surrounded by some of the most extraordinary scenery on the planet.

Experiences

Activities are tailored to weather conditions and guest interests, with expert guides helping guests make the most of their time in Antarctica. Options range from gentle walks around the oasis and explorations of ice caves and tunnels to more adventurous pursuits such as ice climbing, abseiling, mountaineering and kite skiing. One of the most sought-after experiences is visiting a colony of Emperor penguins, reached by aircraft from camp. Other highlights include scenic flights over the ice sheet, visits to nearby research stations, hiking amongst towering ice formations and 4x4 expeditions into the surrounding mountains. Depending on the itinerary, guests may also have the opportunity to journey to the Geographic South Pole. Back at camp, wellness experiences include a sauna, cold plunge and massage treatments – the perfect way to relax after a day on the ice.

Children

Children are welcome, although the suitability of the experience depends on the itinerary and age of the child. Due to the remote environment and expedition nature of many activities, we recommend discussing requirements with our specialists when planning a family trip.

Best Time to Go

Whichaway Camp operates during Antarctica's summer season, typically from November to February, when temperatures are at their mildest and there is almost continuous daylight. These months offer the best conditions for exploration and wildlife encounters.

How to Get There

Guests fly by private charter aircraft from Cape Town to Antarctica, a journey of approximately five and a half hours, before continuing on to Whichaway Camp.
