Kumu Beach

Southern Beaches , Sri Lanka

Kumu Beach is a sanctuary of laid-back luxury and family-friendly hospitality. As a boutique hotel along Sri Lanka’s idyllic southwest coast, it offers guests a tranquil escape amidst the beauty of Sri Lanka’s sandy beaches and turquoise waters.

With just 10 bedrooms, Kumu Beach is a charming boutique hotel where you can relax, unwind, eat well, and enjoy the best of Sri Lanka’s warm and welcoming hospitality.

Fill your days with boat rides through ethereal mangroves, a surf lesson, or scuba diving around the coral reefs of Weligama and Hikkaduwa further south. Cycle breathtaking trails and spend a leisurely afternoon exploring the gardens of Geoffrey and Bevis Bawa or UNESCO Galle Fort.

The hotel is located in sleepy Balapitiya, a 2-hour drive from Colombo. Galle’s 17th-century Dutch fort is just 50 minutes away by road.

Best Time to Visit

The weather is sunniest between December and April, with the latter months being the hottest.

The monsoon season kicks in at the end of April and continues until June and again from September to November.

Despite the rainy seasons, there’s still plenty of sunshine throughout the traditional monsoon months.

Accommodation

Kumu Beach has 10 bedrooms, including 4 suites. All rooms overlook the pool and garden and have spectacular views across the Indian Ocean. Each is furnished with custom-designed beds and chic décor influenced by sunset pinks and ocean blues.

Activities

At Kumu Beach, unique experiences have been crafted to help you explore Balapitiya and its surroundings.

  • Balapitiya Beach, a tranquil expanse of golden sand, is less than 30 minutes from crucial West Coast attractions.
  • Within a 10-minute drive is Ambalangoda, renowned for its arts and crafts. Nearby, Kosgoda offers a turtle nesting beach, hatcheries, and the Madu Ganga River for wildlife boat trips.
  • Bentota’s lagoon for water sports and Geoffrey Bawa's Lunuganga estate are within a half-hour drive.
  • Surfing is best in Hikkaduwa, while colonial history and shopping await at UNESCO World Heritage Galle Fort.

Facilities

The staff's genuine attentiveness goes above and beyond, even bringing dinner menus to your poolside spot.

Despite the exceptional service, the hotel offers modest facilities: a cosy spa room for two and a 23-meter swimming pool featuring sunken bench seating and jets. Wi-Fi can be a bit patchy.

Sustainability

Kumu Beach has ongoing projects that support the local communities in and around the property. These projects range from sourcing fresh produce directly from local fishermen and farmers to engaging in beach clean-ups and hosting special events at orphanages.

Children

Children are greeted at Kumu Beach with various activities, from sandcastle building to plenty of pool time and experiences beyond the hotel, which are suitable for all ages.

Getting There

Balapitiya is a two-hour drive from Colombo’s international airport and is best accessed by car. The train from Colombo to Balapitiya is a scenic way to see the coast and takes a little over two hours (express), albeit prone to delays. Galle’s 17th-century Dutch fort is just 50 minutes away by road.
