Borana Lodge

Laikipia and Northern Kenya

With panoramic views over the Samangua Valley and the Lewa Plains to the Ngare Ndare Forest and Mount Kenya beyond, Borana Lodge in Laikipia is set on a hillside overlooking a lake which attracts heards of elephants, buffalo and often prides of lion.

Borana Lodge has eight sustainable thatched cottages, each unique in style but all comfortable and cosy, with fireplaces and private verandas. Room 6 has a double room as well as a twin room for young children, and rooms 7 and 8 are often sold as family units. The sitting and dining rooms are within the main lodge. Log fires, rosewood tables and snug sofas create the atmosphere for entertaining evenings.

Fresh fruits and vegetables from the local garden provide the kitchen with fresh ingredients; cream, eggs, milk and lamb are from the ranch, while chicken is sourced from a farm nearby.

Borana Lodge also boasts a horizon pool, looking out at the herds of elephants by the lake.

Why we recommend Borana Lodge

Privately owned by the Dyer family for three generations, Borana Lodge is a ‘home away from home' perched on a hillside in East Africa’s largest rhino sanctuary. The elegant rustic cottages here are built with local stone and wood, while bathrooms are built around rock. We have it on good authority that Borana Lodge is the inspiration for The Lion King, so be sure to enjoy a sundowner or breakfast watching sunrise from the real “Pride Rock”!
