Ancient Towns & Living Culture of Yunnan, China
Discover a different side of China, where ancient trade routes wind through highland villages and snow-capped peaks rise beyond quiet valleys. This trip through Yunnan takes you from the lakeside elegance of Dali to the cobbled charm of Lijiang, and onward to the Tibetan-influenced town of Shangri-La, with time to experience Kunming’s cultural pulse along the way.
This is a suggested itinerary – we will tailor your route and recommend hotels based on your individual preferences, whether you're travelling as a couple or with your family or friends.
Day 1
Arrival in Kunming
Touch down in Kunming, the capital of Yunnan Province. You’ll be met and transferred to your hotel, where you can relax and adjust to the highland air. Depending on your arrival time, you may wish to explore the nearby Green Lake Park or enjoy a quiet evening in.
Day 2
Dianchi Lake & Dounan Flower Market
Begin the day with a visit to Dianchi Lake, a vast expanse of water nestled against the Western Hills. Known as the "Pearl of the Plateau," its calm waters and lakeside parks offer a peaceful start to your journey. Later, wander through Dounan Flower Market, the largest fresh-cut flower market in Asia, where stalls brim with roses, orchids, and local blooms bound for markets across China.
Day 3
High-Speed Rail to Dali & The Three Pagodas
This morning, board a high-speed train to Dali, a beautiful lakeside town framed by the Cangshan Mountains. Visit the iconic Three Pagodas, standing as sentinels of the region’s spiritual history. Set against a mountainous backdrop, these 9th-century towers are among Yunnan's most recognisable landmarks. Check in to the Linden Centre, a beautifully restored heritage home preserving Bai architecture and culture.
Day 4
Xizhou Village, Rose Cake Baking & Tie-Dyeing
Step into local Bai life in Xizhou Village, where courtyard homes showcase centuries-old craftsmanship. Learn to make traditional rose cakes using edible petals, then take part in a hands-on tie-dye workshop – a local art form passed down through generations, still practised by Bai artisans.
Day 5
Dali to Lijiang via Shaxi Ancient Town
Travel north via Shaxi, a charming old town that once thrived as a caravan stop on the Tea Horse Road. Explore its cobbled market square and visit the sacred grottoes and temples of Shibaoshan (Precious Stone Mountain), hidden in pine forests. Continue to Lijiang by evening.
Day 6
Jade Dragon Snow Mountain & Blue Moon Valley
Ascend to the lower slopes of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Rather than the crowded glacier route, visit Spruce Meadow, a quieter viewpoint surrounded by pristine alpine forest. Afterwards, take in the open-air Impression of Lijiang performance, a spectacular celebration of local minority cultures, set against a dramatic mountain backdrop. Walk or shuttle through the turquoise pools of Blue Moon Valley before returning to town.
Day 7
Lijiang Ancient Town, Black Dragon Pond & Local Markets
Wander the alleys of Lijiang Old Town, a UNESCO-listed maze of bridges, waterways and carved timber homes. Climb Lion Hill for panoramic views, then visit Mu Palace, home to the former Naxi rulers. Enjoy a peaceful stroll through Black Dragon Pond Park with views of the snow-capped mountains beyond. End the day at Zhongyi Market, a lively hub where locals shop for herbs, teas and produce.
Day 8
Lijiang to Shangri-La via Tiger Leaping Gorge
Follow the Jinsha River into the mountains and stop at Tiger Leaping Gorge – one of the deepest in the world. Walk along the well-maintained boardwalks with views of thunderous rapids and towering cliffs. Then continue your journey to Shangri-La, a town rich in Tibetan heritage.
Day 9
Songzanlin Monastery & Dukezong Ancient Town
Visit Songzanlin, Yunnan’s largest Tibetan monastery, known for its gilded roofs, fluttering prayer flags and hillside setting. Then explore Dukezong Ancient Town, once a key trading post on the Tea Horse Road. Its lantern-lined lanes and whitewashed homes are a window into the region’s Tibetan roots.
Day 10
Bullet Train to Kunming
Travel back to Kunming by high-speed train through Yunnan’s rural heartland. Your final evening is yours to enjoy at leisure – perhaps with a visit to a local teahouse or a stroll through the university district.
