Scene stealing locations for sports

Allianz Arena, Germany

The home of FC Bayern Munich and TSV was the first stadium in the world with an exterior that can completely change its colour. It turns red for Bayern Munich, blue for TSV and white for the German national football team whenever they play there. The lights can be multi-coloured, but the German police requested that it stays one colour due to several drivers getting distracted and causing collisions on the nearby Autobahn.

AAMI Park, Australia

The winner of the most iconic stadium at the 2012 World Stadium Awards no less, the domed park in Melbourne has played host to rugby league games, football matches and pop stars’ world tours. Not just beautiful, it’s clever too – the bioframe design allow light on the pitch yet provides some shelter for the crowd.

Bird’s Nest, China

This USD$428 million Beijing National Stadium formed the centre piece of the 2008 Summer Olympics. With its woven outer structure it quickly became known as the Bird’s Nest to locals. It is about to take centre stage once more as the host of the opening and closing ceremonies for the 2022 Winter Olympics and 2022 Winter Paralympics. It has hosted pop concerts and football matches, but it seems to make most of its money from 20,000 to 30,000 tourists visiting daily who want a selfie in the stadium created by a team including famed artist Ai Weiwei.

National Aquatics Centre, China

Known locally as the Water Cube, the bubble-walled National Aquatics Centre in Bejing is another legacy from the 2008 Olympics. Costing USD$140 million to build, every cent was worth it as 25 world records were broken during the games. The records could be due to the fact that this deep pool allows the waves to dissipate causing less disturbance to the swimmers or that the record breakers were all wearing hi-tech swimwear, which has now been banned.

Ericsson Globe, Sweden

The largest spherical building in the world launched in Stockholm, Sweden in 1989. It took three years to build the ‘Globen’, which is meant to represent the sun. It’s primarily used for ice hockey matches, but it has also played host to international concerts and the famed Eurovision Song Contest.
