Luang Prabang
Luang Prabang
Venerated for the ritualistic giving of alms to monks, the sleepy city nestled in the hills retains much of its character as the ancient capital of Northern Laos with more than 30 temples in its quiet streets.
Luang Prabang is a small city and while most sights can be reached on foot, travelling by bicycle is a pleasant way to see the city with your guide. Wat (meaning ‘temple’) Xieng Thong is a highlight with its intricate mosaics and painted figurines, while Wat Phu Si is best seen at dusk while the setting sun casts its glow over the town and the Mekong beyond.
Best reached by a flight from Bangkok, Luang Prabang is best explored at leisure over three to four nights, in keeping with the laidback nature of this UNESCO Heritage site. Spend a day visiting the Pak Ou Caves and cooling off in the waterfalls.
Moving on from Luang Prabang, travel north on the mighty Mekong to the Golden Triangle as the perfect complement to the end of your trip.
