Argentina has a distinctly European heritage and the refreshing laid-back vibe that is pervasive amongst Latin American countries.
Similar to Chile, the west of Argentina is dominated by the Andes Mountains – from the low-key Northern Altiplano with its dry desert and colourful culture, to the highlands with panpipe music to boot.
Head further south to the world-famous wine region of Mendoza which leads across the Andes into Chile. A bit further and you reach northern Patagonia with its Bariloche district and surrounding lakes and snow-capped mountains, famed for the Cerro Castillo ski region that is a popular holiday destination for locals. The southern Patagonian landscape is extremely dramatic and this is where glacial rivers meet the ocean in spectacular deltas with icebergs galore.
Then there are the hotspots of the stunning Iguassu falls on the border with Brazil and the Ibera wetlands that are home to all manner of wildlife and birds.
Arguably the soul of this country is the eclectic and spirited capital of Buenos Aires – which you can fully experience on your way in and out of Argentina as all flight connections lead via the capital.
