Climb a volcano, visit a UNESCO World Heritage Site and ride a zipline… Lightfoot Travel's Caribbean expert Matt says why St Kitts could be your next adventure
01
Climb A Volcano

If you are looking for a memorable holiday in the Caribbean, pull on your walking boots and join a guided walk to the top of Mount Liamuiga. Step over tangled tree limbs and scramble over rocks and wind your way through the rainforest to the top of the volcano. This hike is not for the faint-hearted, but the sweeping vistas that you spy once you reach the top are worth it.

02
Ride A Zipline

Adrenalin addicts should book the Sky Safari scenic ziplining experience at a former sugar plantation. You can ride four different ziplines and get a birds’ eye view of the rainforest or the ocean, if you can manage to keep your eyes open on the ride.

03
Visit A UNESCO Heritage Site

There’s more to St Kitts than those golden Caribbean beaches. Get a culture fix by visiting Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park. Take the winding road to the 17th-century fort that once helped protect the island from pirates and other invaders. Discover a mock trench, see antique cannons and learn more the slave history. During the day the fort offers panoramic views, but if you want to make it more memorable you should be there for sunset.

04
Take A Seat On The Sugar Train

Ride the ‘Last Railway in the West Indies’. Take a rattan chair on the 1912 “sugar train” and journey from the capital of Basseterre, along the coast and through the sugar plantations. Built to transport the cane to the sugar factories in the capital, the St Kitts Scenic Railway now gives guests the chance to discover this untouched island whilst learning more about its history.

05
Dive With Turtles

Leave the beaches behind and step into the ocean to discover the wreck of an 18th-century naval ship and its encrusted cannons as well as dive sites rich in marine life. Look out for turtles, large green moray eels and schools of squirrel fish as you swim through the deep.
