Wilderness Mara

Maasai Mara & Southern Kenya

Wilderness Mara sits within the Mara Triangle, where open grasslands, riverside forests and a seasonal marsh support exceptional concentrations of wildlife throughout the year. Formerly Little Governors’ Camp, the property has been completely rebuilt while retaining the warmth and understated character for which the original camp was known. Its position offers excellent access to both sides of the Mara River, with prolific resident predators, vast herds of plains game and the dramatic river crossings of the Great Migration all within reach.

Accommodation

The camp has 12 spacious tented suites positioned along the edge of a marsh, each designed to maximise privacy and views of the surrounding landscape. Interiors are elegant but grounded in classic East African safari style, with elevated private decks and both indoor and outdoor showers. A family suite is available, while several tents have ramp access for guests with reduced mobility.

Food & drink

Menus celebrate Kenyan produce and flavours from across the region, incorporating ingredients such as Maasai honey and spices from the coast. Meals are served in camp and at atmospheric outdoor settings, with a refined African-inspired dish offered each evening. A highlight is the Manyatta dinner beneath the stars, combining fire-cooked food with Maasai stories and traditions.

Experiences

Morning and afternoon game drives explore the Mara Triangle’s open plains, marshes and riverine habitats in search of lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, black rhino and large herds of antelope. During the migration season, dedicated excursions can be arranged to watch wildebeest and zebra crossing the Mara River. Guests can also enjoy birdwatching, visits to a local Maasai manyatta and hot-air balloon safaris at an additional cost. Between activities, there is a pool, spa and gym back at camp.

Sustainability

The Mara Triangle is managed by the Mara Conservancy and is known for its strong approach to wildlife protection and responsible tourism. Wilderness continues the long-standing conservation and community work associated with Governors’ Camp Collection through its Educate, Empower and Protect programmes. The camp also uses solar power, and guests can take a behind-the-scenes tour to learn more about its energy systems and lower-impact operations.

Children

Children of all ages are welcome, and a dedicated family suite makes Wilderness Mara a good choice for a family safari. Activities can be adapted to different ages, although younger children may be subject to restrictions on shared game drives. A private vehicle is worth considering for families wanting greater flexibility around timings and the length of each safari.

Best time to go

Wilderness Mara offers excellent wildlife viewing throughout the year. The Mara River crossings usually peak in August and September, although their timing is always dictated by rainfall and the movement of the herds. From November to June, the greener landscape, fewer vehicles and strong resident wildlife make this a rewarding alternative to the busier migration months.

How to get there

Fly from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport to Kichwa Tembo Airstrip, a journey of approximately 45 minutes. From there, it is around 15 minutes by safari vehicle to the camp.

Why we recommend Wilderness Mara

Wilderness Mara combines one of the Masai Mara’s most rewarding locations with a camp that feels intimate and connected to its surroundings. Wildlife viewing is outstanding throughout the year, not only during the migration, and access across both sides of the river opens up a particularly varied area to explore. Our tip? Travel outside August and September for excellent predator sightings, greener scenery and far fewer vehicles.
