Kisawa Sanctuary
MozambiqueRemote yet easily accessible just a short 7-minute helicopter flight from Vilankulo Airport, Kisawa Sanctuary lies on the southern tip of Benguerra Island in Mozambique’s Bazaruto Archipelago. Spanning 300 hectares of coastal forest, white sand beaches and rolling dunes, this extraordinary retreat is a standout on our luxury holidays to Mozambique. It offers rare seclusion and space, with just 14 bungalows across eight private residences — each set within over an acre of untouched wilderness. Designed to blend seamlessly with its surroundings, Kisawa’s award-winning architecture draws on traditional craft and natural materials, creating a harmonious flow between indoor and outdoor living. Guests enjoy private pools, open-air decks with sweeping sea views, and a wealth of immersive experiences — from snorkelling vibrant reefs and sailing dhows to guided dune walks and artisan workshops. At its heart are serene spaces for dining and wellbeing, including the acclaimed Natural Wellness Centre, where treatments are rooted in Ayurvedic and African healing traditions.
Accommodation
Each of Kisawa’s 14 bungalows is part of a one- to three-bedroom residence, offering private pools, expansive decks, and a seamless connection to the outdoors. Interiors feature spacious living areas, king bedrooms, dressing rooms, and outdoor showers. Options range from one-bedroom residences for couples, to multi-bedroom retreats perfect for families or small groups. The design is both sculptural and organic, reflecting the sanctuary's respect for place and privacy.
Food and Drink
Dining at Kisawa is flexible and flavourful, with a focus on fresh seafood, wood-fired pizzas, and locally sourced ingredients. Meals can be served in one of three dining venues, at your residence, or even on the beach. Culinary experiences are tailored daily, with bespoke menus curated to match the moment, from sunrise breakfasts to barefoot dinners under the stars.
Experiences
From snorkelling colourful reefs and sailing on traditional dhows to guided dune walks and hands-on artisan workshops, Kisawa offers a thoughtful blend of adventure and cultural connection. Guests can paddle through mangroves, join a village football match, learn traditional fishing techniques or create with resident artists — all at their own pace. Wildlife encounters add to the magic, with chances to spot dugongs, dolphins, turtles and, in season, whales. Each stay supports vital marine conservation through the neighbouring Bazaruto Center for Scientific Studies. With electric Mini Mokes, tailormade service and complete freedom, Kisawa lets guests set their own rhythm — whether seeking quiet seclusion or meaningful engagement with this remarkable coastal landscape.
Children
Kisawa welcomes children of all ages, with a range of adventures tailored for younger guests. From mini tent camping to paddleboarding and creative workshops, there's plenty to keep them engaged and inspired. Babysitting is available for children over three, and the sanctuary is well suited for families seeking shared discovery and open space.
Sustainability
Sustainability is at the heart of Kisawa’s mission. Every stay supports marine conservation through the neighbouring Bazaruto Center for Scientific Studies, Africa’s first permanent ocean observatory. The resort is also committed to low-impact construction, electric mobility, and local community partnerships that preserve heritage and environment alike.
