Shanghai & SurroundsTucked in the historic Xuhui District, Capella Shanghai, Jian Ye Li is an urban sanctuary housed in a cluster of renovated shikumen townhouses. Designed by Jaya Ibrahim, this Leading Hotels of the World member offers all-villa accommodation and a Michelin-starred restaurant overseen by a French chef, Pierre Gagnaire.
There are 55 one, two, and three-bed shikumen villas, which fuse traditional Shanghainese architecture with Parisian design flair. The villas offer a tranquil retreat from Shanghai with high ceilings, dark wooden detailing, French-style furniture, and Chinese artworks. Large marble bathrooms include Acqua di Parma toiletries.
Le Comptoir de Pierre Gagnaire is run by Pierre’s protégé, Romain Chapel, who offers modern French cuisine focusing on local, seasonal produce. There’s also a lounge-style bar and terrace, and La Boulangerie offering French pastries.
Capella Shanghai includes an award-winning Auriga spa and has a team of personal assistants who are on hand to tend to your every need.

Capella Shanghai is a relatively new property situated in the French Concession. The villas are located over five floors and offer a tranquil retreat from Shanghai with high ceilings, dark wooden detailing, French-style furniture, and Chinese artworks. Le Comptoir de Pierre Gagnaire is very highly recommended so do make reservations for dinner. The onsite bakery is also extremely popular.
