Sabah

Overview

Sabah is the easternmost Malaysian state, making up part of the jungle-clad island of Borneo. It’s a land of ancient primary rainforest, home to the proboscis monkey, and palm-strewn beaches fringed by transparent tropical waters. Sabah is a paradise for outdoor adventure or luxury nature tours.

This sultry corner of Borneo – in the far northeast – encompasses some of the richest and most pristine natural habitats on Earth. Thousands of kilometres of jungle – untouched by the outside world and bisected by thundering rivers – roll past dramatic misty mountains, fertile wetlands and hidden valleys. Offshore lie uninhabited islands, ringed by thriving coral reefs.

And while it may be wild and untamed, with the help of our Sabah specialists, you can discover all its natural treasures with a luxurious bespoke itinerary.

Among a remarkable variety of wildlife, Sabah is home to the endangered orang-utan, one of the most intelligent jungle residents in the world. Sepilok Orang-utan Rehabilitation Park is the most famous place to spot the primates in Borneo. It’s located in the east, and features observation platforms high up in the jungle canopy.

The wildlife doesn’t stop there however. You can take a boat out to Turtle Island to witness these endangered sea creatures laying their eggs at night. Or trek jungle trails to catch a glimpse of Sumatran rhino herds, pygmy elephants, lemurs and countless other rare species.

For the adventurous, Sabah’s undeveloped interior provides never-ending opportunities for fun, from mountain biking to 4×4 safaris to rock climbing. Spend the day kayaking along the snaking Sungai Kinabatangan river or maybe try some high-octane whitewater rafting. Luxury trekking holidays are all the rage at the moment and reaching the mighty summit of Mount Kinabalu – the tallest on the island at 4095m – is the highlight for many.

Sabah is a world-class diving location, renowned as the finest destination in Malaysia. Especially on the idyllic teardrop-shaped island of Sipadan, off the east coast, where a short boat ride takes you to a mesmeric marine world populated by beautiful reef systems and rainbow-coloured schools of fish.

When booking a luxury Sabah holiday with Lightfoot Travel, you will receive impartial expert advice on the most suitable accommodation for your needs. We use a concierge-style service to tailor you holiday to your specific requirements.
