Tried & Tested

Annandale is a collection of four separate properties located in Pigeon Bay, just east of Christchurch – The Homestead, Scrubby Bay, Seascape and Shepherd’s Cottage. Lightfoot’s New Zealand specialists, Mei Yun and Nikki, spent an evening at The Homestead and came back with this report.

The Homestead is a huge 5-bedroom house. Do you need to have a large group to stay?

The property is very spacious with four double rooms each with ensuite bathrooms. The fifth room is designed especially for kids and comes fitted out with four bunk beds and includes a secret door that leads down to the downstairs pantry – very cool! The whole house can sleep up to 12 guests, but that said, it’s perfectly fine for smaller groups to take it out. We’ve had single families stay for weeks at a time! While the house is large, it doesn’t feel overwhelming if you don’t fill every room.

What are the grounds like?

The grounds are huge – 4,000 acres to be exact! Right outside the property is a large vegetable garden where guests can pick their own produce for meals. There is a large infinity-edged swimming pool nearby, with a gym just above it with floor-to-ceiling windows. Adults can work out to these amazing views over the bay, whilst still keeping an eye on the kids as they play in the pool. There’s also a barbecue area by the pool which is great for the warmer, summer months.

What activities can you do from Annandale?

Farm tours are hugely popular as the grounds surrounding the properties are vast and very dramatic – think craggy cliffs and grassy plains dotted with sheep overlooking the shimmering bay. The gardener is quite a character and he leads tours through the garden – a recent client claimed the tour to be the highlight of their whole New Zealand experience! The seaside town of Akaroa is just 30 minutes away and guests can opt for nature cruises to see seals, dolphins, penguins and occasionally whales. There is a full size tennis court, croquet and a fernery on site, and they can organise horse riding nearby.

What is the dining like?

There are two options for dining, the first being a private chef who prepares full meals for guests. The second is your chef will prep the provisions and then the clients cook – a “we create, you serve” type of mentality. The dinner we had whilst there was delicious, and it’s great to have both of those options, especially for guests who are there on longer stays. If guests wish to dine out, the restaurants in Akaroa are a 30-minute drive away.
