Volcano House

Hawaii

The only hotel within the UNESCO-listed Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Volcano House sits on the rim of the Kilauea crater. The oldest hotel in Hawaii, this log-cabin-style property has a simple, rustic charm, but it’s the views of the bubbling crater and eerie orange glow emanating from the molten lava that offer such a special stay.

The 33 guestrooms are cozy and welcoming, with views of the volcanic crater and lush, tropical plants of the national park. There are no TVs, though rooms are well connected with complimentary iPads. It’s worth paying extra for the deluxe crater-view rooms with a private lanai.

There are two dining options: The Rim, which celebrates the flavors of the Pacific region; and Uncle George’s, which offers snacks and cocktails.

Nearby attractions include Volcano Village, a local arts and crafts center, and Punaluu black sand beach, home to Hawaiian green sea turtles.

Why we recommend Volcano House

It’s safe to say that no other US hotel can boast these views: from some rooms and the lobby restaurants you can witness the same phenomenon that birthed the Hawaiian Islands. A landmark on the map itself, Volcano House is cozy, rustic, and offers comfortable rooms. While facilities are few, there are card games, iPads, GoPros, library books, and bikes for exploration.
