North Island, New Zealand
With stunning lakeside lawns and surrounding forested hills, the setting of this Edwardian-style lodge, Wharekauhau Country Estate, will take your breath away. The cabins are set away from the main house and reflect the surroundings, decorated in a true modern farmhouse way. With high ceilings, exposed wooden beams and a large canopied bed, the rooms are cosy and luxurious. Just what you need if you are there during the nippy winter. Neutral, modern decor is the style throughout, yet traditional elements are evident everywhere. The cottages are all different sizes and sleep different numbers with some more suited to families than others, all with stunning views over the cliffs or gardens.
The lodge is fully equipped with all mod-cons, as well as an impressive 24-metre indoor heated swimming pool, gym, all-weather tennis court and fitness centre. Make sure you make the most of these facilities before enjoying your pre-dinner drink and canapes in the lounge or courtyard.
The food at the lodge is excellent. You can choose to join up with other guests or eat alone in the dining room, always enjoying the chef’s top-notch food. There is also a hotel bar which is open all day to guests and as the owner is involved in the wine trade, rest assured that the wine selection is always excellent.
Spend your days exploring the farm and the coastline, or try a spot of horse trekking, archery, mountain biking or clay pigeon shooting. At the end of an eventful day be sure to make the most of the spa facilities and unwind with a massage or a stint in the indoor pool.
