Kandy, Sri Lanka

The Kandy House is a stylish, luxurious and highly sought-after colonial mansion 12 kilometres from Kandy’s town centre.

This carefully renovated ‘Wallawwa’, or colonial manor house, is set in the spice-growing hills that surround Kandy – far enough away to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, but close enough to use as a base for visiting its most memorable sights. Its completion heralded a long-awaited event in the hill country capital: a brilliant small boutique hotel capable of offering stylish and private accommodation and attentive personal service in a beautiful natural setting. The inspired refurbishment with its light white interiors, polished hardwood floorboards, jackwood staircase, Dutch-style antique furniture and careful injections of colour, has been nothing short of a triumph. Channa Daswatta, one of Geoffery Bawa’s protoges and Sri Lanka’s leading modern architects, provided the creative inspiration.

The bedrooms are unquestionably the finest in Kandy. The rooms are divided into Deluxe and Ultra (slightly larger rooms) and are named after the butterflies which thrive in Sri Lanka  The freshwater infinity pool in the garden and the wide verandas are perfect for dozing or unwinding with a good book. The Kandy House was once the seat of the King’s Chief Minister, Ratwatte Adigar, who betrayed his country as Ceylon fell into British hands in 1815. Old Ratwatte family photos and antique furniture still remain.

The Kandy House is ideally located to explore the area. Relax in the Botanical Gardens, visit the Temple of the Tooth to view ceremonies presided over by resident monks and taste Ceylon tea at the old tea factory. For the sporty there is the world class Victoria Golf Course, the international cricket stadium and the magical Knuckles Range with peaks of 1500m and varieties of wildlife is a wonderful place to hike and bike.

The Kandy House is the sister property of The Last House in Tangalle.

The Kandy House Testimonials

Hi Melissa

Sri Lanka was fabulous – we loved it! Could not recommend the Kandy House highly enough, such an amazing building and location and the service was fantastic. The same has to be said for Tea Trails – wow! We are now on strict diets trying to make up for that stay! Service again was faultless and the food was just stunning. Loved the location, perfect for us and absolutely exceeded expectations in terms of scenery. We walked everyday and have some gorgeous pics. Colombo again was great, would have loved to have had an extra day there to do some shopping but would not have missed the walking tour for anything – it was such a highlight. Mark was fantastic. So all in all simply delighted with everything. We would never have had the time to organise it ourselves so having someone take care of it was just perfect – thank you so much! I think we may need a return visit so we can check out Galle.
