If you want to explore further afield, Phuket is a great jumping off point to explore Phang Nga Bay off the northeast coast of Phuket, including the nearby 'James Bond' islands (made famous by the 1974 movie The Man with the Golden Gun'), as well as the Phi Phi islands. Two hours' drive north of Phuket, low-key Khao Lak has a brilliant array of luxury resorts dotted along this idyllic and pristine stretch of coastline. At the crossroads of five national parks, there is a lot more to do in Khao Lak than just sunbathing. The Similan Islands are a short boat ride away and a haven for keen divers. At the same time, Khao Sok National Park is a place of raw natural beauty, featuring rugged limestone peaks and the world's oldest evergreen forest.
