Song Saa Testimonials

Hi Ying,

Can you believe that Song Saa was even better than last time? It is hard to improve something that was so good in the first place. Song Saa was amazing and needless to say, I am already trying to figure out a way to go back. That place really agrees with me!

Thanks,

Song Saa Offers

Tried & Tested

Lightfoot Travel’s Keira pays a visit to the remote Song Saa Private Island, the only one of its kind in Cambodia’s Koh Rong Archipelago located on its southern coast. With stunning villas, beautiful scenery and an eco-theme that is pervasive throughout, we soon find out that Song Saa more than lives up to the hype!

What were your first thoughts upon arriving at Song Saa?

It’s very barefoot luxury, and everything felt very serene and relaxed. The island was much smaller than I expected, but that made it all the more intimate. It’s the type of place where you kick off your shoes when you arrive and don’t put them back on until you leave!

Song Saa is called it an ‘Eco Resort’, is it obvious throughout?

Yes, they do much more than the usual ‘Save water – don’t wash towels’ that most hotels do. The resort has an Eco-centre where you can learn more about all the things they do, and a lot of the activities are eco-focused. There is also a team of six conservation staff and they have established a marine reserve around both islands that includes a ‘No take zone’. They also support the local community by helping the local village improve water supply, creating a composting system (the first on the island) and a treatment system for domestic water waste.

The rooms look amazing in pictures, can you please describe them?

The villas are an absolute highlight. They are beautifully designed and decorated to a really high spec. You can choose between sunrise or sunset villas, ones with direct access to the sea, etc. Melita (the owner’s wife) is an interior designer and artist and did all the design work. The villas are all very private and great for couples.

Which is the best room in the resort and why?

This depends on what you are looking for. I prefer the Overwater Villas as these offer direct access to the sea. However, these are located on the slightly more ‘busy’ side of the island so you will see the comings and goings from the jetty as well as local fishing boats. I found this quite interesting and didn’t mind it in the slightest. But if you are looking for total privacy or to sunbathe naked, these are not for you! The Ocean View Villas are on the other side of the island and offer total privacy – the sea is a bit choppier so no boats and nothing on the horizon. Downside is you cannot access the sea from these villas.

If you could pick three things that really set Song Saa apart, what would they be?

– The villas are outstanding and really set this place apart. They are some of the best I have seen.

– This type of property is totally unique in Cambodia. You feel like you have totally gotten away from it all.

– The focus on the local community and giving back is really inspiring. You only need to talk to the staff on the island to hear how positively the resort has been received.

Would you recommend it as a place for families? Is there anything for kids?

The resort is a lot more child friendly than I expected. There are a number of excursions and activities that are aimed at families or ones that can be catered to suit children of young age. There is a small play room with toys and games that parents can access – although this is not a kids club and does not offer babysitting. Also worth noting, the beach is very small. And lastly, if families did go, it is likely that they would be the only ones there at any one time meaning no immediate playmates. Rooms are all doubles and you can add one extra bed for a family of three. There are 2-bed villas, but both rooms are doubles and it might not be the safest for young children.

What is the dining like? Any standout dishes?

The food is very good. In the evenings you can choose to follow the set menu designed for that day, or order off the expansive a la carte or in-villa dining menu. There is a great mix from local specialties such as amok fish to pizzas!

Why go to all the hassle of getting to Song Saa when you could hop on a direct flight to Phuket or Bali?

The remote feel of this place is wonderful. It does take a bit longer to access, but I actually found the 3-hour drive from the airport to the jetty enjoyable. It was really interesting to pass through the villages and see local Cambodian life in action. Of course the best option would be to combine a stay at Song Saa with a night or two in Phnom Penh and a visit to Siem Reap – a wonderfully diverse holiday!
