Thaa Atoll, Maldives

Maalifushi by COMO is the first luxury resort to open in the little known Thaa Atoll in the southern part of the Maldivian archipelago, 50 minutes by seaplane from Malé Airport. Set on eight hectares of lush tropical vegetation and surrounded by sparkling turquoise waters, this exclusive and secluded property offers the ultimate barefoot chic escape for couples and families.

Maalifushi features 66 suites and villas, some which benefit from their own pools and butler service. Built from locally sourced materials, these stylish and elegant rooms have thatched roofs and cool-white interiors offering a rustic chic experience. Romantic Overwater Suites are perfect for honeymooners, while spacious two-bedroom Garden Villas are suited to families with younger children.

Top-notch gourmet dining options at Maalifushi include fine dining restaurant Tai, specialising in Japanese seafood, and all-day dining restaurant Madi, serving up regional and local delights. Romantic dinners and secluded picnics can be arranged on an uninhabited neighbouring island.

The emphasis at this private island retreat is on relaxation and rejuvenation. There’s a 44-metre pool, a magnificent COMO Shambhala Spa offering holistic therapies in overwater treatment rooms and a yoga pavilion. It is rare to find an unspoilt house reef in the Maldives, but the house reef at Maalifushi by COMO is one of them, offering exceptional diving and snorkelling. There’s a possibility of seeing whale sharks in season and excellent surf breaks can be found nearby.

Maalifushi by COMO makes for a relaxing family holiday destination, with a lagoon that is safe to swim in and gently sloping white sand beaches. Babysitting can be arranged and there are activities to keep children entertained.

Maalifushi, by COMO Testimonials

Hi Mei Yun,

We are home and missing Maalifushi very badly. Wow what a place. I have to say we thought it perfect in every way. The villa was exceptional, the location was breathtaking, and every single member of staff that looked after us was very polite, helpful, and could not have done more for us. If all Como resorts are this good we will definitely be trying them again.

It was a great recommendation from Lightfoot to go there, quieter than other resorts, better diving, and very high quality. All exactly what we wanted.  We have now had three exceptional holidays arranged by your company, so far so good.

Dear Mei Yun,

We had a fantastic time in the Maldives. Everything was perfect from start to finish. We were very satisfied with the hotel choice. The room setting was great and also the two restaraunts offer very nice food. We liked the ambiance at the resort and the service was just perfect.

We can highly recommend Maalifushi by COMO to anyone looking for a special time and have already been thinking about rebooking and returning…

We were also very satisfied with the service of you and lightfoot. All our requests have been considered, e.g. overwater villa with sunset view, bycicle reservation, etc. Thanks a lot.

Hi Mei

We had a wonderful holiday and are very happy to have chosen Maalifushi by COMO. From the moment we arrived in Male we felt very well looked after. Our villa was spacious and we liked the outside area with the small pool. Unfortunately it rained a lot so that we could hardly make any use of it.

We also liked the little details in the villa like the Nespresso machine, fruits and the water in glass bottles. We appreciate that they try to be environmentally conscious.

The breakfast was good and healthy maybe they could have a bigger spread. We liked the freshly squeezed juices. The food and drinks at the restaurant were, as expected expensive.

Our son did a lot of scuba diving and was very happy. In general we were happy with the facilities and the different activities on offer. Everything we booked through you was confirmed. Again it rained a lot and we had to miss out on some activities (snorkeling).

We are also happy with the services from Lightfoot Travels – we feel it was a relaxing and well organized holiday, thank you.

We hope to go back to the Maldives and enjoy better weather next time.

Thank you and regards,

FLS

Tried & Tested

Maalifushi by COMO is the group’s latest addition to their Maldives portfolio and, just like its sister hotel, is a stunning resort offering an exclusive beach escape. Lightfoot Travel’s Melissa was lucky enough to stay in both and explains what makes Maalifushi different from Cocoa Island.

What is unique about Thaa Atoll, on which the hotel is located?

Thaa Atoll is actually a new atoll and marine biologists don’t know very much about it yet. The breaks here are pretty incredible so this is paradise for hard core surfers – image getting on a sea plane with your surf board and being dropped off next to virtually deserted breaks – but it is also a great spot to spot manta rays. The hotel actually has a Manta Trust Centre in its Dive Centre where a team of experts are studying the marine life and manta rays around the area.

Describe the room you staying in and which ones are better suited for families and couples.

The Water Villa I stayed in was incredibly spacious; the living room, separate bedroom and oversized bathroom would accommodate 2 adults and 2 children with ease. My private infinity pool was great for short laps and the outdoor deck was perfect for a sunset cocktail. Needless to say, it was heavenly!

For couples, the Suite categories would accommodate 2 adults perfectly and come with a spacious living area. I’d definitely suggest the Villas for the extra privacy and generous space if the kids are coming along. Maalifushi also has a couple of 2 bedroom suites and villas which easily compare in size to some of the apartments we have back in Singapore.

How does Maalifushi by COMO differ to its sister property, Cocoa Island?

In terms of size, Maalifushi by COMO has double the rooms and caters very well to families. It is decked with a good kids club, more facilities for children, far larger pool and many more restaurants. It’s definitely a bigger resort and less intimate than Cocoa Island, although both have incredibly good food and service throughout. Cocoa Island is very cozy whilst Maalifushi has a lot more going on with a good buzz to the place.

Describe the overall feel of the resort

Elegant family-friendly resort. Very modern and generous in space allocation. Kids and parents will be very well taken care of at Maalifushi by COMO.

Tell us about the diving opportunities in this region.

The diving is excellent here, and coupled with a very good in-house dive operator with good quality and new equipment, guests are guaranteed a great time exploring the underwater wonders. All rooms come with a little snorkelling card which highlight the marine life you’re likely to discover exploring Maalifushi’s house reef as well as more information on which you should probably not disturb – very useful for non-avid divers who want to learn a little more about the aquatic life.
