Lankanfushi Island, Maldives

Gili Lankanfushi (formerly known as Soneva Gili by Six Senses) is located in one of the largest lagoons in the Maldives, with jetties threading across the crystal clear water out to spacious over-sized villas that provide spectacular ocean views from every room.

Conveniently located just 20 minutes by speedboat from the airport, Gili Lankanfushi leads the way in barefoot luxury with its overwater villas – the first of their kind in the Maldives. An intimate coral island in a sparking lagoon, everywhere you look marine life abounds, and the gleaming waters beckon.

Gili Lankanfushi has 45 luxurious villas, including some on private islands only accessible by boat. These offer the utmost in privacy and sophistication. The resort has its own fully-equipped PADI diving school with other watersports also on offer. There is also a tennis court as well as a freshwater swimming pool.

There is a ‘No news, no shoes’ philosophy on this island. Basically, guests are encouraged to leave their shoes on the boat, their computers at home, and totally embrace the laid-back, stress-free nature of island life!

It is no easy feat picking THE perfect Maldives getaway as the idyllic islands boast such beautiful properties across the country. That being said, we do have our favourites and Gili Lankanfushi ranks in the ‘must-experience-at-least-once-in-your-life’ category. Lightfoot Travel’s Managing Director, Simon Cameron was fortunate enough to experience this exquisite resort with his wife son Freddie and is still elated by the time spent there.

We couldn’t wait to ask him about his trip, and here’s what he said:

What are the top 3 things that make Gili Lankanfushi so special?

1) It is just so convenient, only 15 mins away by luxury private speedboat from the airport. Arrive on the morning SQ flight and by lunch time you’ll be digging your toes in the sand sipping your first drink on the holiday – few things can beat that feeling!

2) It is a stunning island, with expanses of beautiful beaches and glorious powdery white sand. There is loads of space as it only has 45 villas so it feels very exclusive and private as there aren’t many people around.

3) Last but not least, the rooms are massive! Biggest in the Maldives if you include all the deck space / roof terrace. We also loved the Mr/ Ms. Friday concept, a staff member assigned to your own villa who is on hand to help out with anything, from arranging excursions, booking spa treatments, dining reservations and so much more.

With the rooms all being overwater, is this safe for children? / What room type would you recommend for families?

It is safe for families but you would still need to keep a very close eye on toddlers. I’d recommend the Residences for families as the sitting room has air-con so you can have children sleep in a separate bedroom, but still in the same villa.

Tell us about a few of the activities Freddie really enjoyed.

He loved standing on the jetties watching the baby sharks swimming in the shallows. Also the pool is really nice and right next to the beach, so he enjoyed running back and forth between the two. We used bikes to get around the island and they have a bike trailer for the kids to sit in. There are also tons of other activities older kids would enjoy, like riding tubes that are pulled by speedboats and dolphin excursions.

What is the diving like?

We didn’t have a chance to go scuba diving, but just snorkeling was an amazing experience! Just like everywhere in the Maldives, you are never further than a 10 minute speedboat ride to a good reef, and that is no exception at Gili Lankanfushi.

Where is the best place to watch the sun setting into the ocean?

If you want your own privacy, we’ll be able to request a sunset villa from where you can enjoy the setting sun’s rainbow colours from your sun deck.  The main bar is also ideally located for breathtaking views of the iridescent skies.

What is the food like?

Amazing, and one of Gili Lankanfushi’s highlights!

The resort has an elevated dining area in the Organic Garden from where you can enjoy stunning 360 degree views of the sea and the gardens. Their Japanese restaurant, fused with European, Asian and Peruvian flavours, is delicious as they use local ingredients (daily catch and organic produce from the resort’s own gardens). Wine aficionados will be happy to know that Gili Lankanfushi has an underground wine cellar where you can do gourmet wine and cheese dinners.
