Thailand with Kids

Lightfoot Travel specialise in tailor-made itineraries for family holidays, honeymoons and corporate travel around the world. Below is a sample itinerary for a family holiday to Thailand, and can be adjusted based on your time, budget and interests.

Day 1: Street Food & Jam Factory, Bangkok

Upon arrival in Bangkok, you will be met and greeted by your Lightfoot Travel guide and transferred to your hotel.

The Peninsula Bangkok is excellent for families, with interconnecting rooms, a kid’s menu and a wide range of activities and programmes. Budding chefs can learn to cook at The Peninsula Kids Academy’s Junior Chef or take an art class.

After checking in and settling down, head out to discover one of the least touristy street areas of Bangkok. Your guide will introduce you to different types of street snacks and explain how to use local modes of transportation like the ever-present Tuk Tuks. Cool the kids down with a fresh, cold fruit shake, while parents can enjoy a Thai Iced Coffee “Kafae Boran”. Afterwards, hop on a ferry and cross over to Klongsan district to explore the local market in the area.

End your walking tour at the Jam Factory, a small industrial design complex with a modern book café and a unique furniture shop by a famous Thai artist. Located in the complex is The Never Ending Summer Restaurant, a cool industrial style Thai restaurant with authentic food and a cosy vibe.

Day 2: The Floating Market & Countryside, Bangkok

After breakfast, drive just an hour south of Bangkok to Samut Songkhram, a province that gives a glimpse into Thai countryside life. Start the day by hopping aboard a short regional train bound for an amazing country market that has sprouted along the railway tracks. The kids (and parents alike!) will be in awe of the dexterity and speed of the vendors as they quickly pack their stalls right before the train approaches; hence bringing shopping to a brief halt. It is a standard practice and stall holders have learnt the art of assembling and reassembling their wares at a moment’s notice!

Next visit Damnoen Saduak Floating Market and take a long-tail boat ride through the canals. Stroll around the colourful marketplace bustling with boats and vendors selling tropical fruits and other delights, sending the children on a scavenger hunt which will have them bartering and interacting with the stall owners!

Day 3: Bangkok to Chiang Mai

This morning, take an early flight to the mountainous northern city of Chiang Mai. Upon arrival you will be transferred to your hotel by private car.

Set in the Mae Rim Valley, Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai is our top family hotel in the area. The Gecko Club welcomes children ages 4 to 12 and offers complimentary games and activities daily. From exploring the property’s vast gardens, learning to cook and planting sprouts in the rice fields to kid’s yoga and spa treatments – there is something for every age. The hotel also arranges babysitting services to give parent’s some much-needed alone time.

You will have the rest of the day at leisure to explore this stunning property or simply kick back and relax poolside looking out over the rice paddies.

Day 4: Experience Local Life, Chiang Mai

So you really want to live life like a local Thai? Today, you will experience a typical day in the life of a Chiang Mai resident – no tourists, no sightseeing, just real life home cooking in a real Thai neighborhood.

Join Mr. Prapat in his family car and transfer 20 minutes to Hang Dong to spend the day with your ‘Thai family’. In true Thai style, slip into a pair of local ‘fisherman’s pants’ and discover the architecture of a traditional Thai house and rice barn. Your Thai family will also demonstrate their basket weaving skills, a tradition that has been in Thailand for centuries, and an activity that the kids will love.

Stroll around the small, family orchid and select fresh ingredients to add to the days cooking extravaganza. You will learn to cook traditional home cooked recipes with authentic Northern Thai flavors that are different from standard dishes offered in commercial cooking classes. Enjoy a delicious home cooked lunch with your family.

Day 5: Full Day Elephant Care, Chiang Mai

Today, get up close to elderly elephants by attending an Elephant Care Program where the kids will learn how to take care of these beautiful creatures. Upon arrival at the camp, you will learn about Asian elephants and get changed into the mahout uniform. The morning starts with learning to make ground up grass to feed them, visiting the elephant cemetery, making fire in the stove, stirring sticky rice to make elephants snacks in the afternoon and bathing the elephants. You will then enjoy lunch at the camp.
In the afternoon, learn to make snacks and use external herbs on the elephants, follow a trail of mahout and elephants by mini trekking to see the area where they sleep at night, and feed the most elderly elephants from a basket of bananas.
