Tea Plantations and Coastal Hideaways

Sri Lanka is a fascinating country with plenty to see and do. You could spend weeks traversing the teardrop-shaped island, but with this nine-day itinerary we focus on two of the Sri Lanka’s most memorable and uniquely beautiful areas: its misty tea plantations and tranquil southern beaches.

Day 1: Arrival into Colombo

Upon arrival in Colombo, you will be met by a Lightfoot Travel representative and transferred to your hotel by private car.

Built over 200 years ago, The Wallawwa combines old and new concepts in chic Sri Lankan style. Given its close proximity to the airport, this luxury private hideaway is the perfect starting or endpoint to your Sri Lanka holiday.

Today you can take some free time to relax in The Wallawwa’s natural setting by the garden or pool. If you feel up to it, venture into Colombo for a spot of shopping on Paradise Road, famous for its original boutiques. Return to the hotel and indulge in a relaxing massage at ‘Z’ Spa to relieve any jet lag and prepare you for bed.

Stay: The Wallawwa

Day 2: Colombo to Hill Country

This morning after breakfast, head to the train station and take your seat in the 1st class observation deck on the train to Hatton. The passing scenery as you wind your way up into the hills is truly spectacular, and we recommend leaving the observation deck to spend some time sitting in one of the open carriage doors – a very memorable experience!

Upon arrival in Hatton you will be met and transferred to the Tea Trails. Located in the magical solitude of Sri Lanka’s prime tea land, these beautiful plantation bungalows offer high tea and exquisite service amongst the rejuvenating hills of the Bogawantalawa Valley. These historic houses have been restored to offer guests the unique experience of life on a working tea estate.

Stay: Tea Trails

Day 3 - 4: Tea Plantation Exploration

For the next two days, take time to absorb the beautiful natural scenery and embrace the surrounding countryside of Sri Lanka’s Hill Country. The opportunities to explore the tea plantations are plentiful and the unspoiled beauty of the surrounding valleys and hills make it an unparalleled biking, hiking or walking experience.

You can also take a visit to the local Ceylon tea factory where you can observe the process of tea manufacturing and gain a greater understanding of the industry that helped build this unique area.

Stay: Tea Trails

Day 5: Hill Country to Weligama

After breakfast, your driver will transfer you by private vehicle to Weligama and your home for the next four nights, the stunning Cape Weligama Resort.

The boutique hotel is situated on a cliff overlooking the dazzling Indian Ocean and is just 30 minutes east of historic Galle Fort. The property reflects the style of a traditional Sri Lankan village, combining the country’s rich culture and history with contemporary design and comforts.

Spend the afternoon at leisure, settling in to your beautiful bungalow and enjoying the spectacular views.

Stay: Cape Weligama

Day 6-8: Coastal Relaxation

Spend the next few days enjoying Cape Weligama and the surrounding area.

Snorkel, swim, kayak on Koggala Lake, enjoy guided cycling tours through the countryside or embark on an exciting whale watching cruise from nearby Mirissa (subject to season). Surfing is also a fun way to spend the morning and can be done at several neighbouring beaches.

If you’re looking to travel further afar, venture into Yala or Uda Walawe National Park for a day spent searching for Sri Lanka’s plethora of native wildlife.

For those wishing to do as little as possible, cool off in the stunning pool; be pampered at the spa; or sip a cocktail in the bar overlooking the Indian Ocean.

Stay: Cape Weligama

Day 9: Departure

Today after a late check out you will be transferred by private car to Colombo. Enjoy a dinner at The Wallawwa before heading to the airport in time to catch your flight home.
