Gobi Desert Explorer

Experience an understanding of Mongolia’s remarkable past as you embark on a 7 night adventure through this fascinating country.

Day 1: Arrive in Ulaanbaatar

Arrive in Ulaanbaatar, where you will be met by your guide and driver who will transfer you to your hotel. Settle into your room before meeting your guide in reception for a walk across Chinggis Khaan Square and visit to the Museum of National History to gain an understanding of Mongolia’s remarkable past – a worthwhile introduction to your stay in this fascinating country.

End the evening with a dinner at one of our favourite Mongolian restaurants where you can sample traditional Mongolian dishes.

Stay: Shangri-La Hotel

Day 2: Ulaanbaatar - Dalanzadgad - Yolyn Am

Rise early for your transfer to the airport and flight to Dalanzadgad. You will be met by your guide and driver for the short journey west to Yolyn Am in the Gurvan Saikhan mountains. Settle into your first ger camp before heading off to ‘Eagle Gorge’ itself. Here you may witness argali sheep and ibex picking their way across sheer cliffs and lammergeyers soaring above hunting for prey.

Return to camp for dinner and your first night sleeping in a “ger” (the traditional Mongolian felt tents), the design of which has changed little over the centuries.

Stay: Three Camel Lodge

Day 3: Yolyn Am - Khongoryn Els

Travel west and through the stunning Gurvan Saikhan National Park. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife such as ibex and gazelle. Settle into the camp before driving across the dunes and trekking to the top for one of the most spectacular views in Mongolia.

Stay: Private cabin, ger camp

Day 4: Khongoryn Els - Camel Trek

After breakfast, drive to a camel breeder’s family. Learn about the life of a camel breeder and the camels themselves. Take a trek on the camels across the desert landscape. Later this afternoon, if you have not done so already, climb (on foot) to the top of the nearby highest dunes for one of the most spectacular views in Mongolia. This is best enjoyed at sunset or sunrise.

Stay: Private cabin, ger camp

Day 5: Kohngoryn Els - Bayanzag via Petroglyphs/Moltsog Els

Today head to Bayanzag – known as the ‘Flaming Cliffs’ – for a walk in this stunning location. You can also visit the dunes at Moltsog Els or the petroglyphs at Khavtsgait (depending on group) – both located about a 45 minute drive away. While staying at this remote camp, make sure you spend a few moments away from the lights to look up at the incredible array of stars in the night sky.

Stay: Three Camel Lodge

Day 6: Bayanzag - Dalanzadgad - Ulaanbaatar

Making your way to Dalanzadgad this morning, you will be flying back to the Ulaanbaatar. Before you leave Mongolia you may want to stock up on some of the things that have caught your eye during your stay and other items that can be purchased at very reasonable prices. From cashmere jumpers, Mongolian boots and fur hats to caviar and traditional music, Ulaanbaatar’s shops and markets have it all. Enjoy a guided tour around the State Department Store, Gobi Cashmere and the Central Market, where haggling and vigilance are top of the agenda!

Stay: Shangri-La Hotel

Day 7: Gandan Monastery and Chinggis Monument

Today, there will be a guided visit to Gandantegchinlen Monastery where you might see monks chanting their morning prayers. Head east out of the city to visit the giant Chinggis Khan Equestrian Monument at Tsonjin Boldog. At the base of the statue, you can try on traditional Mongolian costumes and tour the numerous portraits of the Khan lineage, before climbing into the horse’s head for a panoramic view over the surrounding landscape towards Chinggis’ birth place.

Return to Ulaanbaatar in time for a concert of traditional Mongolian music and dancing including throat singing. Your guide will accompany you to one of our favourite restaurants for your farewell dinner.

Stay: Shangri-La Hotel
