It’s perhaps fitting that the island of Siargao forms the shape of a tear trop. The Spanish sailor Bernado de la Torre must have wept out of joy and amazement when he discovered it in 1543. Even by the Philippines’ off-the-chart standards, it’s extraordinarily beautiful, a lush emerald in the turquoise sea.
Siargao is a youthful travel destination, especially for luxury tours. Until recently only surfers came here: coming to test themselves against the near-mythical Cloud 9 break. Accommodation consisted of a few beach shacks and bars.
Standards have improved in that regard, but the island remains unspoiled and undeveloped, making it a truly idyllic barefoot luxury holiday destination. Thick mangrove swamps fringe parts of the coastline, sugar-white beaches peppered with coconut palms other parts. There are shimmering lagoons and secluded pirate coves and vivid coral reef system off the coast, teeming with tropical fish. Verdant forests and thundering waterfalls lie in the interior, while wildlife ranges from lemurs to monitor lizards.
As well as the surfing, the diving is sensational with vast underwater caverns to explore like Blue Cathedral. You can spend some time hopping between Robinson Crusoe islands off the coast or deep-sea fishing for enormous mahi-mahi.
The accommodation we’ll have you staying is very special, barefoot luxury at its best. Stylish boutique cottages on the beach, designed to fit in harmoniously with the lush and tranquil surroundings.
