Tongole Wilderness Lodge

Malawi

Set amongst the woodlands of the Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve, Tongole Wilderness Lodge offers a safari experience in one of Malawi’s last areas of unspoiled wilderness. The eco-lodge is constructed to blend with its natural surroundings, while its sustainable tourism model benefits local communities and wildlife.

Accommodation is in four thatched chalets, hugging the banks of the Bua River. Built by local craftsmen, the rooms are open fronted with a large deck overlooking the river, and en suite with flush toilet, shower, and large freestanding tub that doubles as a plunge pool. There’s also a two-bed cottage, ideal for families or groups of friends.

Melas are served in the dining area, and there’s also a refreshing outdoor pool and several decking areas to watch wildlife.

With a focus on low-impact tourism, activities tend to be non-motorised, with guided bush treks, canoe safaris and birdwatching walks, along with visits to local schools and villages.

Why we recommend Tongole Wilderness Lodge

“Along with its heavyweight nature drives, we’re huge fans of the eco-friendly offerings and authentic experiences here. The lodge was founded to benefit both the wildlife of Nkhotakota Reserve and the welfare of the people living on its borders. Don’t miss the chance to visit the community with your guide and see projects, many of which are education-based and supported by Tongole.”
