Exterior of Les Sources de Caudalie

Country-side living, wineries, soothing massages, divine food, gorgeous rooms… Those are just some of the things Lightfoot Travel’s Elgin experienced while staying at the stunning Les Sources the Caudalie located in Bordeaux’s country-side. One of his favourite stays during his France work trip, Elgin describes his stay and why this property is unique and a must!

How far away from Bordeaux is Les Sources de Caudalie?

It’s about a 20min drive, in the countryside near Martillac village. It’s very easy to get a taxi over to the property, or private transfers can be arranged. Getting to Bordeaux is also very easy from Paris: just hop aboard a TGV and you will arrive after a 3 hour scenic train ride.

What makes this property unique?

It’s a great way to experience both the urban and rural aspects of Bordeaux. The UNESCO heritage of Bordeaux is just a 20min drive away where you can explore its rich, architectural history and visit shops and restaurants. When the crowds become too much to bear, you can retreat to this quiet enclave among the vineyards, Bordeaux’s highlight. Excellent wine paired with great food from a Michelin-starred chef, combined with an excellent spa and a myriad of activities around the property. There’s so much or so little you can do, depending on your preference!

Who would this type of property appeal to most?

Its location in the vineyards of Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte only mean one thing to us: divine wine! So foodies, be prepared for an overload on your taste buds. And with their partnership with Caudalie, a skincare company, your body is well cared for too.

Tell us more about the food and wine offer at Les Sources de Caudalie.

Definitely a highlight! There’s the Michelin starred La Grand’Vigne (who just received its 2nd star a well-deserved accolade!), featuring fresh products from the coast and in the countryside (some even from the hotel’s own vegetable garden). For something more casual but also serving high quality of food, La Table du Lavoir is designed like a country inn with lots of wood and glass, it would have been perfect in the summer sun, although I basked in the full moon that evening while enjoying my food. These restaurants are not open every day and sometimes only for lunch and/or dinner, so that’s where the wine bar Rouge comes in – serving all day light food and snacks as well as serving up a killer brunch, which you can enjoy by the pool. Guests will never go hungry at Les Sources de Caudalie. And of course, you have Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte next door, which is one of the most famous wineries in the region. Be sure to take the tour which is free for all guests, and it includes a tasting as well.

The property recently opened up new suites. Tell us more about those and how they differ from the old ones.

The old rooms and suites are more traditional and similar to the barefoot luxury style (think Six Senses in the countryside). They are named after wines, a tribute to its wine heritage and the décor is more traditional, featuring a lot of wood and antiques. With the new suites, they’ve named them after the coastal villages in the Bordeaux region, and the furnishings are a little more contemporary.

As its name implies, Les Sources de Caudalie is partnered up with Caudalie for its spa. How were the treatments? How does the spa use its natural surroundings to create a unique spa experience?

It was my first time experiencing vino-therapy, which incorporates the benefits of grapes pulps, seeds and vines as the main ingredients of the massage, and also natural spring water from the deep grounds. Though I found it bizarre having grape seeds on my body at first, I got used to it. The added benefit is that is has a nice exfoliating effect on the skin – and I felt fresher after the treatment! Spa treatment rooms are very well done, lots of wood, yet with modern facilities. There’s a good sized heated indoor pool, hammam, and lots of lounging space looking out to the vineyards.

What is La Chartreuse du Thil?

This is an authentic and historical country house, located about a mile away from the hotel. I did not manage to see it, with so many things in the main property keeping my occupied, but I was told that you can rent the entire property on its own, great for large family gatherings or a small company retreat – with 9 rooms and 2 suites in total.

What would you say was the highlight of your stay?

That’s such a difficult question, I loved everything about my stay – this was easily one of the best hotels I’ve have to chance of staying in whilst in France! I think what makes it special was the service – the team at the hotel are young, but they know how to look after guests, from the front desk to the waiters at the restaurant and team at the spa. Always with a smile and looking out to make you feel more comfortable. Hardware and software of the hotel should always go hand-in-hand – that’s what makes a property stand out from the rest!

How does a trip to Les Sources de Caudalie fit into a more global holiday to France?

Very easily! With the high speed TGV from Paris, you can reach Bordeaux in as short as from 3.5hrs, with some trains departing directly from CDG airport, so it’s quite hassle-free! And a holiday is not about seeing the most attractions in the least time possible, it’s about experiencing what the region has to offer in so many ways – gastronomy, culture, rejuvenating your body. And Les Sources des Caudalie hits all the right spots for that!
