Tried & Tested

As a treat after completing the Marathon of Da Nang, Lightfoot Travel’s Nikki headed over to beach side property, Fusion Maia, for a weekend of intense relaxation and pampering at the spa. Located on Vietnam’s central coast, this luxury boutique resort provides the perfect balance between healthy living and indulgent luxuries, just what you need on a vacation! Read on to learn more about this enchanting all-villas resort.

Asia’s first all-inclusive spa resort? What exactly does that mean?

The way it works is, each guest is able to sign up for a minimum of two treatments per day. Once you’ve had your two appointments, you can sign up for more that day provided there are therapists available. This is just to ensure that it’s fair for each guest and everyone can comfortably arrange their treatments. If you are spa obsessed, there are definitely advantages to visiting during non-peak periods as you’re more likely to secure more spa time when the resort isn’t full. However, we were there for three days and found our two daily treatments to be the perfect amount. I do recommend scheduling your two daily treatments in consecutive time slots, as it’s incredibly relaxing to settle down in your room knowing you won’t have to move for the next two hours!

What are the treatments like?

The spa menu is fairly extensive and includes various types of massage, facials for all skin types, mani/pedis, body wraps and scrubs, as well as hair treatments. You arrive at the spa ten minutes before your scheduled time, receive a welcome glass of water or tea, then change into your robe and are led to your treatment room. We were in town for the Da Nang half-marathon, so we took full advantage of the many massage types over the course of our stay! The “Be Active Thai Fusion Massage” was particularly phenomenal and the perfect treatment after a long 21k run. The therapists are all lovely and very skilled, and the treatment rooms are simple yet very elegant and most importantly, calming. The best treatment spot in the resort has to be the two outdoor beds that are located on either side of the spa pool. Located in a little alcove, you can feel the fresh sea breeze as you receive your massage and listen to the sound of the pool’s waterfall – blissful!

What are the villas like?

All the villas at Fusion Maia have a private pool, and I couldn’t believe just how private they were. Choose between one-bed pool villas, two-bed spa villas or three-bed beach villas. The rooms themselves are very big with huge bathrooms that include a large sunken bathtub. The villa’s private pool is larger than most pools I’ve seen, and there is a grassy area outside as well with tables and chairs set up. Each villa is fully enclosed which makes it an ideal spot to get rid of those tan lines!

How was the dining?

The breakfast was delicious – a great mix of Asian and Western buffet items with omelets, pho and bun made to order. There was also an a la carte menu that includes pancakes, eggs Benedict, crepes and even soba noodles. One nice touch is that the resort offers breakfast at any time of day, so if you miss the breakfast buffet, you can head over to the pool restaurant and choose from their breakfast menu later in the day. The food at the pool restaurant however was rather underwhelming, but I recommend heading over to Hoi An Town or Da Nang for dinner.

It sounds perfect for couples, but is it alright for families?

While I wouldn’t say it’s a family hotel, there were a considerable number of families when we were there, and all the kids seemed to be having a great time. The main pool has a very shallow end (0.5 metres), so it’s actually quite a good spot for the little ones. There is a kid’s playroom downstairs as well as game room with pool and ping pong tables and babysitters can be hired, with daily activities such as traditional hat painting and other arts and crafts. The spa pool is lovely and quiet for those adults looking to avoid splashing children, but I found that the children there were exceptionally well behaved. At one stage there were more than ten kids in the pool but it wasn’t noisy at all. One thing I would note is that younger toddlers may need a bit of extra supervision in the villas as the sunken bathtubs aren’t ideal for wobbly baby legs, and the bathroom does not have a door to close it off.

What else is there to do at the hotel and its surrounds?

The seemingly infinite stretch of beach in front of the resort is lovely, and the sand is super soft and kept perfectly clean by Fusion Maia staff. There are a handful of cabanas set up on the beach that can comfortably fit three people, which were amazing. Lying in the shade, listening to the waves and reading my book was so enjoyable even in the midday heat as there was a constant breeze coming in off the sea. The UNESCO World Heritage site of Hoi An is 30-minutes away by resort shuttle bus (which departs four times daily), or you can jump in a cab for about US$15 each way. If you’re going into town each day the ride does get a bit tedious, but we didn’t mind and happily made the trip multiple times for shopping, trying different restaurants, and picking up our daily helping of the best bahn mi we’ve ever had!

Any lasting memories?

The staff at Fusion Maia were absolutely lovely and what stuck out to us was just how flexible everyone was – switching around treatment times, bringing extra sun loungers to our villa, even lugging over buckets of ice so we could do the ALS ice bucket challenge in the main pool! Each guest is appointed a “Fusionista” upon arrival that tends to them over the course of their stay, and ours was the lovely resort General Manager, Gillian. She came to see us at breakfast every morning, armed us with restaurant recommendations from the staff for our journeys into Hoi An, and even had a congratulatory cake waiting for us in our room after we finished the marathon. A wonderful experience from start to finish!
