Cordoba has a strong colonial heritage and a wonderful location in the heart of Argentina. It lies on the banks of Primero River in the foothills of the Sierra Chicas, surrounded pastoral farmlands and sprawling cattle ranches.
A little off-the-radar for most tours to Argentina, Cordoba is a cultural and historical delight with no little Latin vibrancy thrown in too.
History permeates through every quarter of this 16th century city. It’s centrepiece is the Jesuit mission complex, a well-preserved Unesco World Heritage site and one of many fine ecclesiastical buildings here. It’s university, the National University of Cordoba, is the oldest Argentina, earning the city a historic reputation as a centre of learning. There are also a number of nationally-acclaimed art galleries in the city.
But in way that is almost uniquely South American, Cordoba blends vibrant modern life seamlessly with its rich history. And you’ll become accustomed to seeing hip bars with DJs and live bands amongst all the Catholic ruins. It’s a great foodie city too with no shortage of opportunities to indulge in the twin Argentine passions of steak and wine.
As well as the cultural aspects, the spectacular location provides lots of chances for adventure on a luxury tour. Everything from hiking the sierras to mountain biking to paragliding is available. Although for a more traditional experience, head out to a country estancia for some of the best horse riding in Argentina. Cordoba is also a great base for exploring the Pampas and the immense Andes themselves.
