Aqaba & the Red Sea
Overview
On Jordan’s southernmost tip is the country’s only port city and sun-kissed luxury resort, Aqaba. Jordan’s only window to the crystal waters of the Red Sea, the little 16 mile coast has gone from strength to strength in recent years, with new waterfront resorts providing an upmarket gateway to the world-famous diving of the Red Sea.
The Red Sea retreat is quickly becoming the hottest year-round diving destination. Hot summers and warm winters – think 25C – have boosted Aqaba’s international reputation as a beach playground. Luxurious seafront hotels and spas provide direct access to pristine golden beaches and 25 or so dive sites, as well as stunning vistas of the Gulf of Aqaba.
Within the protected confines of Aqaba Marine Park lies a mesmerising undersea paradise of vivid coral reefs, schools of bright and gaudy fish, eerie shipwrecks and deep sea caverns. For a truly immersive experience try night diving – guided only by the moonlight – where strange nocturnal sea creatures come out to play.
One of Aqaba’s best day trips is out to the legendary Unesco-listed Pharaoh’s Island, only half an hour out into Egyptian waters. The craggy islet was once the site of a 12th century Crusader castle, and today is best known for being surrounded by the finest reefs in the Red Sea.
