Mumbo Island Camp

Lake Malawi

Located on a pristine, uninhabited island on Lake Malawi, Mumbo Island Camp offers an off-grid, Robinson Crusoe experience. Bursting with rustic charm, the camp provides barefoot luxury amid unspoilt nature, while strong sustainability policies leave minimal footprint on the land and crystal-clear waters.

There are seven tastefully furnished tents, accommodating 14 guests. Built from local timber, thatch and canvas, the simple rooms have comfortable beds, separate eco-toilets and hot-water bucket showers, and a private veranda with hammock.

The restaurant serves simple, wholesome meals from locally sourced ingredients, and there’s a small bar, lounge, and watersports gazebo.

Lake Malawi has the highest number of fish species of any lake in the world, so snorkelling and diving are a highlight.. Guests can also fish, kayak, hike, sail, laze on the beach or gently swing in a hammock. A sunset cruise is the ideal way to round off the day.

Why we recommend Mumbo Island Camp

“As well as offering a wonderfully off-grid escape vibe, we love that this camp adheres to the principles of eco-architecture and blends into the surroundings. Even the tents are set on raised platforms with separate eco-toilets and bucket showers to help preserve the environment. On top of the green credentials, the location of Mumbo Island Camp is simply stunning. Spend your days swinging in a hammock, floating on the lake, or indulging in the many activities on offer.”
