Belmond Villa San Michele

Florence

In the cypress-lined hills outside Florence, Belmond Villa San Michele sits in the home of a former Franciscan monastery among terraced gardens that look out across the city.

With just 46 suites and bedrooms, the property is a national monument dating from the 15th century, the building’s façade having been designed by Michelangelo himself. Inside, public areas and bedrooms contain frescoes and antiques. Outside, the gardens are filled with secluded spots in which to enjoy the spectacular views. The outdoor swimming pool is heated and has a restaurant and bar alongside.

Food is high on the agenda here, with the Loggia restaurant serving seasonal Tuscan produce on its grand terrace or inside its elegant dining rooms.

Villa San Michele has its own cookery school, including a dedicated kids’ concierge and a Young Chefs Academy. The Smile Club for children offers pizza-making classes and tours of the hotel’s secret gardens.

Why we recommend Belmond Villa San Michele

We love the façade designed by Michelangelo and the interesting rooms and suites. The onsite Cooking School where you can learn how to recreate the best Italian specialties at your own kitchen is also really special - there’s even a program for young kids to develop their talent. If you like alcohol, don’t miss out on the “Shake & Drink” cocktail lesson which is really fun - don’t leave without trying out their fresh white-peach Bellini!
