Tried & Tested

Matakauri Lodge is one of the most famous properties in Queenstown, and Lightfoot’s New Zealand specialists, Nikki and Mei Yun were fortunate to test it out on one of their familiarisation trips through the country. Here, Nikki gives us a first-hand account of the luxury lodge.

Did Matakauri Lodge live up to your expectations?

I stayed at sister properties The Lodge at Kauri Cliffs and The Farm at Cape Kidnappers on a previous trip to New Zealand, and so I have to say I was doubtful I would enjoy Matakauri AS much. That said, after arriving to the warmest of welcomes from lodge staff, enjoying a coffee in the cosy library overlooking the lake and checking into my incredible suite – the property did exceed any expectations! The location is truly stunning with uninterrupted views of Lake Wakapitu and the surrounding mountains, which were capped in snow when we visited in late May. The suites are beautifully appointed and very spacious – I definitely did a giddy little dance upon arrival! The property is fantastic all year round and just a quick drive to the Queenstown city centre.

What was your best memory from your stay?

Most definitely waking up before sunrise and heading to the gym. The gym overlooks an infinity pool which in turn overlooks the lake and mountains. Sweating it out on the exercise bike and watching the mountains emerge as the light got brighter and the sky changed colours was definitely something I will never forget.

What rooms would you recommend for your clients?

I was fortunate enough to stay in one of the 7 Deluxe Suites (6 outlying and 1 within the main Lodge). These are incredibly spacious with commanding lake and mountain views. The freestanding bathtubs and daybed looking out over the lake were some of the highlights. There is also a Lodge Room that is located on the upper level of the main Lodge, which is quite a bit smaller in size but a very nice option for couples who are looking to spend a bit less. This Lodge Room can also interconnect with a Deluxe Suite which is a really nice option for families. The 4-bedroom Owner’s Cottage is exceptional, though it does come with a hefty price tag!

What were your favourite three things about the property?

  • The gym!
  • Eating the freshest scrambled eggs and crispy bacon for breakfast, sitting next to the floor-to-ceiling windows in the restaurant and watching the sun come out behind the mountains.
  • The suites are some of the nicest I’ve seen – large with high ceilings and magnificent views.
