View of the Mount Sainte Victoire

Le Pigonnet is what can only be described as Aix en Provence’s most iconic hotel. The Provencal manor house, which dates back to 18th century has played host to several local and international celebrities – as can be seen on the walls of the main building adorned with autographed photos – with famed painter Cezanne regularly setting up shop in his favourite spot in the garden to paint another of Aix en Provence’s famous landscape, the Mount Sainte Victoire. After a couple of years of decline, new investors (one of which was revealed to be actor Christopher Walken!) are eager to return Le Pigonnet to its glory days. Lightfoot Travel’s Elgin was lucky enough to test out this gorgeous property and believes that Le Pigonnet is a must-stay whilst visiting the south of France.

Where is Le Pigonnet located? How close / far is it from the city centre?

It’s just outside the core city centre in a quiet neighbourhood, just a 10min walk to the main fountain or Cours Mirabeau, the main shopping street. Being just out of the city centre has its benefits – it’s quieter, the hotel has 2 lovely hectares of gardens and free parking for drivers. Don’t feel like walking into town? The front desk will be happy to arrange a complimentary shuttle right into the heart of town upon request. Now isn’t that great?

Describe the design of the hotel

Le Pigonnet has 2 wings, the main building and the new wing. Ironically, the main building was renovated 2 years ago and generally has a more contemporary with the use of wood in the décor and furnishings, darker and richer colour, whilst the new wing still has its traditional, Provencal décor: carpeted floors (no cold feet!), more classic tiles in the bathrooms. That said, as with most traditional hotels in Europe, all rooms are unique, some with separate bathtubs and showers, some with only showers, some with a combined bath and shower – if you have a preference, always let us know!

What was your favourite spot in the hotel? Tell us about the gardens too!

My favourite spot in the hotel is its cosy fireplace – imagine snuggling up in a comfortable armchair with a good book and hot chocolate. Heavenly! There’s also a small bar, with a more modern style which is great to enjoy a few drinks with your mates.

While I was not able to ‘try and test’ the gardens as I was there in the winter, I can imagine taking a lovely stroll through its famous rose walk during the summer, lounging among the blooms or even taking an outdoor massage among the lush greenery. I was also told that guests can have massages outdoors in the summer, which seemed very enticing!

What room did you test out?

I got a lovely Deluxe Room with a little balcony overlooking the gardens, it would have been perfect if not for the awful weather which, according to locals was the worst they’d seen in decades! The room was of a good size for 2 persons, very comfortable king bed with the most pillows I’ve ever seen – 10!

La Table du Pigonnet has an indoors and outdoors dining option? Is it possible to enjoy the outdoors even during winter? What was the food like?

Yes, it is possible to eat outdoors at La Table du Pigonnet, but I would save that experience for summer when it’s not too cold and dreary, the garden is in full bloom and the sun is shining. There are large glass doors though, so you could still enjoy the gardens from the warmth of the indoors. During the summer months they have an outdoor lounge with live music, which seems like a great and chill experience! Regarding the cuisine, food is all regional produce so you know you are getting something really fresh!

Who would this type of property appeal to?

A mix crowd really – anyone who wants to experience a luxury property hotel with history and tradition, one who appreciates a tranquil location with lovely gardens (the rose blooms from May to Jul are supposed to be fantastic), and at a reasonable price! The staff is brilliant and clients are well cared for, so you know that you will be in great hands!
