Meru National Park, Kenya

Elsa’s Kopje is an award-winning boutique safari camp situated in the heart of the rugged and remote Meru National Park in Laikipia in Northern Kenya. Set in the rocky hillside above famed conservationist George Adamson’s original camp, this idyllic wilderness retreat is renowned as being one of the most elegant safari lodges in Africa. It will appeal to adventurous travellers seeking an intimate and remote safari experience in a spectacular setting. Children of all ages are welcome.

There are nine open-fronted, safari-style cottages that have been crafted around the rocks to blend in with the landscape. Each cottage is elegantly designed and features a four-poster bed; open sitting room and stunning open-air bathrooms; as well as a veranda; all with views across the plains. Some cottages come with outdoor baths. The stunning, 3-tiered honeymoon cottage is terribly romantic, while Elsa’s two-bedroom Private House, which includes a private garden and infinity pool, is ideal for families wanting to indulge.

The food at Elsa’s Kopje is first class with mouth-watering North Italian home cooking served on individual tables. Enjoy bush breakfasts in the middle of nowhere, delicious picnic lunches and candlelit dinners in the open air under the stars.

The camp has almost exclusive access to the national park, which offers an enormous diversity of wildlife and habitat, as well as a thriving rhino sanctuary. Head out on early morning game drives in open vehicles with experienced guides for the chance to spot lion, elephant, hippo, rhino and a myriad of other animals and birds. For a unique experience, the camp also offers evening game drives using red-light spotlights.

Other activities include guided bush walks, river fishing, a day trip to Tana River or visits to local villages. Back at the camp, cool off in the infinity pool as you admire the views or ease weary limbs with a massage.

The main season is in January and February when the climate is hot and dry. This means the animals tend to stay closer to watercourses, making them easier to spot.

Elsa’s Kopje Testimonials

Hi Nico,

Just wanted to write and say – amazing trip in Kenya! Thanks for your recommendations, it really was a great experience and one that we will be pouring over and remembering for a long time.

The people, animals, camps (Elsa’s Kopje and Elephant Pepper) and food was all excellent. The hot air ballooning was magical too. We will be back to Africa for sure! Would love to get our parents to Elephant Pepper someday.
