Head to the southern Amazon for one of our favourite jungle experiences in Brazil. Reached by flight from Cuiaba, also the gateway to the northern Pantanal, this allows for a combination of jungle and wetlands for one of the top wildlife experiences on earth. Home to the excellent Cristiano Lodge, a couple of hours’ journey by 4×4 and boat from Alta Floresta. Set within a private reserve extending some 28,000 acres, it offers excellent wildlife viewing, superb guides and as an ecolodge is seriously committed to conservation of the forest and aiding the communities that live within it. It also happens to be very comfortable.
Cristiano has only 16 rooms so expect personal service, attention to detail and great food. Whilst the older standard rooms are simple, the superior rooms and bungalows are excellent, blending seamlessly with the jungle. The larger bungalows come with private gardens and outdoor bathtubs.
The activities on offer are varied and interesting, led by an expert local guide alongside an English speaking naturalist guide. Wander along the many jungle trails to see every aspect of the Amazon whether you encounter armies of ants, frogs, capuchin monkeys and birds high up in the canopy or simply gain an understanding of the herbal uses of the plants. You may encounter a tapir on a quiet river bank, a herd of peccary pigs (or certainly smell them!), capybara and if lucky a Giant Anteater. There are boat trips and canoeing is a great way to see Giant River and Neotropical Otters and don’t worry about crocs or piranhas if you take a refreshing dip in the river off the floating deck. One of the highlights is heading up one of the two canopy observation towers for stunning views across the treetops and excellent bird watching – over 580 species have been sighted in the area which is approximately half of all Amazon bird species. For those keen to focus on birding or photography, the stay can be tailored to suit.
Lightfoot Travel provides tailor-made itineraries that include daily tours and excursions, restaurant recommendations and bookings, and can incorporate Amazon into a greater Brazil & Latin America holiday.
