Amalfi Coast, Italy

A word of warning: you’ll need a head for heights if you’re to enjoy a stay at the Hotel Caruso. Admittedly, the hotel isn’t at altitude, but it is perched at the highest point of the hill town of Ravello, and you simply won’t be able to escape the dramatic views of the Amalfi Coast spread out below you.

Member of the Belmond Collection of worldwide hotels, trains and cruises, the Hotel Caruso has the most spectacular location. 50 luxurious suites and rooms occupy a beautifully restored former palace dating back to 1800, and while the fresco-lined interiors are very special too, this hotel’s true magic lies in its setting.

Extensive terraced gardens are planted with rows of scented citrus groves, rose-shaded pergolas lead the eye through to original medieval walls, and the swimming pool at the Hotel Caruso simply has to be seen to be believed. Apparently suspended above the Gulf of Sorrento miles below, the water seems to spill down the cliff; truly an infinity pool to top all others. Pool butlers will bring you an iPod loaded with tunes of your choice to complement the view; or perhaps you’d like a fresh juice as you soak in the panorama.

The beautiful town of Ravello overlooks the Amalfi Coast from its privileged ‘birds nest’ position, and Hotel Caruso offers complimentary boat cruises around the coastline, as well as a shuttle service to nearby Amalfi and Positano. Perhaps the best time to visit Ravello is during the summer months and the Ravello Festival (or “Wagner Festival”) of music and the arts.

The Belmond Hotel Caruso’s Belvedere restaurant serves traditional Neapolitan and Italian dishes on the large outdoor terrace, or, during high summer, within the gardens themselves. The hotel also has a poolside bar and a cocktail bar featuring live piano music.

Finally, the Caruso offers guests a wide range of spa treatments in its Wellness Centre.

Lightfoot Travel provides tailor-made itineraries that include daily tours and excursions, restaurant recommendations and bookings, and can incorporate the Amalfi Coast into a greater Italian or European holiday. Take a look at A Private Ski Safari in the European Alps as an example of a bespoke itinerary that we can create for you.

Belmond Hotel Caruso Testimonials

Great job!! We had a wonderful time and the sunset cruise was really special and such a surprise!! Thank you Nico and Simon!!!!!

Belmond Caruso was really special. Very authentic, classy, unbelievable food and views but the service was what set it apart from anything else. Truly a great experience. I would stay there again. It didn’t feel touristy and I loved Ravello and the quaint town.

Casa Angelina is a different beast. Amazing views, good food, great location if you want to rent a boat, which we did and a very modern fresh vibe. It isn’t as classical or as authentic Italian as Caruso as is a different caliber of hotel. You definitely feel the tourism more being nearer Positano and the clientele are of a different class. Caruso is Italian and classy European and Angelina is USA and Oz.

All-in-all a fantastic week.
