Amanfayun

Shanghai & Surrounds

Hidden in a picturesque valley not far from Shanghai, China, and only a 20-minute drive along with bamboo and tree-lined avenues from the center of the bustling city of Hangzhou, Amanfayun enjoys a serene setting surrounded by tea fields, natural forest, quaint villages, and a pilgrimage circuit of five significant Buddhist temples.

Designed in the spirit of a traditional Chinese village, Amanfayan comprises 47 stone dwellings. Due to the unique nature of the structures, no two rooms are identical. All furniture is freestanding and includes daybeds, sofas, dining suites, and floor and desk lamps. Fine calligraphy art pieces decorate the walls. Most open to private or semi-private courtyards with outdoor dining and lounging areas.

A diverse array of restaurants and tea houses specialize in traditional Chinese fare, as well as western and vegetarian dishes. There’s a serene 20m pool set in lush greenery, with views of the mountains. The spa, spread across five pavilions, offers seasonal treatments based on local flora to soothe and revive.

Why we recommend Amanfayun

Easily reached from Shanghai, Amanfayun is a nurturing retreat for body, mind, and spirit. The reason it looks like a town that could have served as a backdrop in a period film is that it's an actual village. At its heart, a 200-year-old former temple hosts daily cultural activities, and cobbled paths connect guests with authentic eateries, a traditional bathhouse, and one of China’s most significant temples. The place has an old-world charm and timeless quality, which also applies to the spa where the treatments have been used for generations.
