Down South: Patagonia Cruising Adventure

This 5 day Patagonia cruise through the fjords of the far south of Chile and Argentina is a unique experience only offered by the M/V Stella Australis or Via Australia.

Sailing from Punta Arenas in Chile to Ushuaia in Argentina experience a magnificent landscape of towering Andean peaks and huge glaciers, there is also a plethora of wildlife species such as penguins, seabirds, seals and potentially whales and sea lions Take zodiac cruises past icebergs in remote bays to get up close to glaciers or walk to viewpoints, there is plenty to do on this Patagonia Cruise.

The Stella and Via Australis ships offer a variety of itineraries from September to March. The Stella operates this four night Punta Arenas – Ushuaia cruise and a three night Ushuaia – Punta Arenas cruise. The Via operates the same routes plus three night Punta Arenas – Punta Arenas, 3 night Ushuaia – Ushuaia and 4 night Ushuaia – Punta Arenas departures.

Day 1: Arrival into Punta Arenas

Board the cruise ship at Punta Arenas and prepare to set sail as the sun sets. The ship then departs to the southernmost part of the Earth, through the Strait of Magellas and Beagle Channel to explore one of the most breath-taking wilderness regions in the world: Southern Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego

Day 2: Ainsworth Bay – Tuckers Islets

At dawn, you will continue navigating through Almirantazgo Sound, arriving at Ainsworth Bay, inside the Alberto De Agostini National Park. From a distance, admire the Marinelli Glacier which descends from the Darwin Mountain Range. Other exotic sights include a beaver dam in the sub-polar Magellanic forest, elephant seals relaxing on the beach…

Later, you will sail to Tuckers Islets, and after lunch board the Zodiac boats to view Magellanic Penguins (which only live in the Southern Hemisphere), and Cormorants. In September and April this excursion is replaced by Brookes Bay, for a short walk to approach a glacier.

Day 3: Pia Glavier & Glacier Alley

Navigate along the main part of the Beagle Channel to reach Pia Fjord, where you will disembark near Pia Glacier. Next is a short hike to a look-out point with a spectacular view of the entire glacier tongue, stretching from high in the mountains all the way to the sea. After this unforgettable experience, we continue sailing along the northwest arm of the Beagle Channel through majestic “Glacier Alley”.

Day 4: Cape Horn – Wulaia Bay

Sail through the Murray Channel and the Nassau Bay to reach Cape Horn National Park, where you will disembark (weather permitting). The mythical Cape Horn was discovered in 1616, and it is a sheer, 425-meter (1,394-foot) high rocky promontory. For many years it was an important navigation route between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, and it is known as the “End of the Earth”. The park was declared a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2005.

In the afternoon, you will head to the historic Wulaia Bay, once the site of one of the region’s largest Yamana aboriginal settlements. Charles Darwin landed here on January 23rd, 1833, during the voyage of the HMS Beagle. This area is also renowned for the mesmerizing beauty of its vegetation and geography. You will walk through a Magellanic forest of Lengas, Coihues, Canelos, ferns, and other native vegetation to reach a look-out point.

Day 5: Ushuaia

Arrival at Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world. From here, you can choose to continue your explorations of Argentina or continue home.
