Raja Ampat aboard the Damai

Best known for its remoteness and amazing diversity of marine life, the Raja Ampat archipelago has one of the richest coral reef ecosystems in the world – scuba diving and snorkelling here is a dream come true for anyone from the uninitiated to the experienced.

Located off the northwest tip of Bird’s Head Peninsula on the island of New Guinea in Indonesia’s West Papua Province, Raja Ampat’s 1,500 or so islands, cays and shoals are centred around the four main islands of Misool, Salawati, Batanta and Waigeo. These breathtaking islands are best experienced on a luxury yacht charter decked out with top-end dive equipment, sea kayaks, knee boards, wake boards, water skis and fishing gear. The icing on the cake is the capable and friendly crew, who have been sailing Indonesia’s magnificent waters for years.

Day 1: Day 1: Arrival Sorong and board the Damai

Your journey on the high seas begins with a  flight to Sorong and a 10 minute drive to harbour, followed by a short speedboat ride to board the Damai. Have lunch and get orientated while the Damai sets sail 50 nautical miles to Pulau Gam – a small island to the north  west of Papua and a great base for the first night. Bed down early in anticipation for a full day ahead.

Day 2: Air Borek & Pulau Yanggelo

Rise early today at 5.30am. After a quick coffee & toast jump on the speedboat ride to a local village. With your local guides, hike 20 minutes to the location where you have the opportunity to spot birds of paradise – be patient, be quiet and you will likely be rewarded although there are no guarantees of course. Head back to Damai in the late morning and set sail to Air Borek, 8 nautical miles away.

You will have entered the narrow channels amongst which the reefs are home to Manta Rays, if you’re lucky you will spot them while diving or snorkelling. Swim by cleaning stations where wrasses come out to clean off parasites from the mantas.

Set sail again for Pulau Yanggelo, 20 nautical miles away, while lunch is served. Have the afternoon to snorkel in amongst the beautiful coral gardens & mangrove tree roots on the edge of these mangrove islands. Opportunity to dive to find the wobbegong shark, found only in this area. Great opportunities for kayaking, water skiing & knee boarding at this mooring location if you’re not keen to go underwater.

Day 3: Wayag Islands & Mount Pindito

Wake early to view the sunrise as you approach the Wayag islands – this is an extremely picturesque sight with the mountains to the right & the rugged outlines of the islands straight ahead. Damai manoeuvres into the maze of the islands & moors while breakfast is served.

You have the chance to dive or snorkel on the nearby house reef – Giant scallops, bumpheads, reef sharks & a huge range of colorful corals await – or explore the labyrinth of islands on speedboat.

After lunch, laze around or work off the calories with an afternoon hike up Mt Pindito. It looks challenging but actually is a relatively easy 20 minute climb for rewarding views of these extremely beautiful but waterless islands. Cool off after the exertions in the cool waters of the gorgeous beach below the pinnacle before dinner.

Day 4: Pulao Pai

Dependent on weather & sea conditions you will set sail to Pulau Pai for a day trip departing in the early morning. Upon arrival, snorkel with the Hawksbill turtles on the reef in a breeding sanctuary, manned with guards who patrol the island & ensure that the breeding beaches are undisturbed. This is also a great chance to see the hatchery beaches before  cruising back to the Wayag islands in the afternoon. Option to snorkel, dive, or catch a few winks before a bonfire & cocktails on beach.

Stay: Damai Dive Cruises

Day 5: Alyui Islands and Jendana Bay

Yet another day to further explore the islands and lagoons littered throughout the sea. For the restless, grab this opportunity for a dawn hike up Mt Pindito to see the islands in a different light.

Set sail after midnight to Alyui Islands & Jendana Bay.

Stay: Damai Dive Cruises

Day 6: Jendana Bay to Kabui Straits

Wake in the beautiful Jendana Bay. An early morning kayak sessions along the cliff face of the islands is a sight to behold, before a visit to the Atlas pearl farm to view the process of pearl farming.

Have lunch on board as Damai sails out of Jendana Bay and onto the Kabui Straits, discovered by Alfred Wallace.

Spend the late afternoon exploring the narrow Straits via speedboat or drift along with your kayak enjoying the evening birdsong and friendly greetings of the locals as they go by on their anodes.

Stay: Damai Dive Cruises

Day 7: Departure

Wake & re-explore the Strait of Kabui you have the opportunity for the last few dives along the cliff walls or to kayak further into the bay. The tiny strait between the islands of Gam & Waigeo make for a special place to do wall, drift and cave diving for experienced divers. For those less confident, the speedboat can tow your kayak into the bay to drift down the whole length of the strait drinking in the beauty.

After lunch, sail onto Pulau Pef to explore this beautiful mangrove area – enter lagoons, discover unusual orchids & birdlife via kayak or on the boat before heading back to Sorong to end your trip.
