Finland Winter Adventure

Lightfoot Travel specialise in tailor-made itineraries for family holidays, honeymoons and corporate travel around the world. Below is a sample itinerary for a winter holiday to Finland, and can be adjusted based on your time, budget and interests.

Day 1: Helsinki Arrival

Upon arrival at Helsinki Airport, you will be met by your Lightfoot Travel guide and transferred to your hotel, approximately 40 minutes by car.

As Finland’s first luxury hotel, Hotel Kämp has been the hotel of choice for the most prominent figures in Finnish culture, science, and business, as well as international guests for more than 130 years. This award-winning property is among the finest hotels in the world. Enter the graceful sandstone building and discover a place where timeless elegance and European glamour unite. Retire to your spacious room, sumptuously decorated, and equipped with a bath, separate walk-in shower, and dreamlike amenities that will let you relax and unwind.

Stay: Hotel Kamp

Day 2: Helsinki Highlights

After a wonderful sleep in your sumptuous bed you’ll set out to explore the highlights of Helsinki, a harbourside capital that embraces the Baltic Sea. You set the pace on this private 4-hour tour, choosing which of the city’s glorious attractions are calling to you. Perhaps you’ll pick the Helsinki Cathedral and Senate Square, where a modern version of the European glockenspiel rings out every afternoon. Or the Market Square and Old Market Hall, where merchants sell cheese, fish, produce, spices, and sweets from their colourful stalls. There is Temppeliaukio Church, hacked out of rock, hence its nickname of ‘Rock Church,’ and Uspenski Orthodox Cathedral, the largest orthodox church in western Europe and a brilliant example of Russian influence on Finland’s streets. Whatever you choose, you’ll be delighted by this Scandinavian capital.

Stay: Hotel Kamp

Day 3: Helsinki to Kittilä

It’s time for an adventure in the Arctic circle. A short flight will bring you from Helsinki to Kittilä, where you’ll check-in to your winter wonderland accommodation, a glass-ceilinged igloo at Levin Iglut.

Just 10 kilometres from the bustling resort town of Levi, Levin Iglut offers stunning mountain views, but it’s the views above that will take your breath away. Watch open skies and the Northern Lights from the comfort of your cozy bed. Sit by the fireplace or take a dip in the outdoor hot tub, sipping mulled wine under the stars. While there isn’t an official restaurant, fresh local produce can be ordered in advance and cooked over the BBQ in a wooden teepee hut. You may be tempted to stay up all night and observe nature’s beauty, but that would be a mistake because there is plenty on the agenda for tomorrow, so fall asleep under the stars and get ready for a winter adventure.

Stay: Golden Crown Levin Iglut

Day 4: Hit the slopes

Today you’ll say goodbye to igloos and hello to the vibrant ski resort of Hotel Levi Panorama. This cozy property is perched on the mountainside of Levi Fell, above the town, with breathtaking views beyond. This hotel is an ideal choice for winter sports enthusiasts, and this afternoon you’ll see why as you hit the slopes with private instructors for an afternoon of skiing and fun.

Exhausted from the adrenaline and fresh air, you’ll arrive back at the hotel in time for an après ski cocktail or hot chocolate, your reward for all your hard work on the slopes.

Stay: Hotel Levi Panorama

Day 5: Bundle up for Snow Village

If you didn’t get enough time to practice your snowplough, or your double blacks yesterday, then hit the slopes again this morning for another private ski lesson in the crisp morning air. Then, in the late afternoon, embark on a private tour of Snow Village, a magical world of ice and snow. Each year, 20 million kilos of fluffy white flakes and 350,000 kilos of crystal clear ice are used to build this spectacular site, which changes annually in shape, size, and design. Explore a crystalline chapel and spectacular ice sculptures at every turn. Cap off the evening with a 3-course dinner at Ice Restaurant, a place you must experience to believe. Bundle up because temperatures are kept between -2 and -5 degrees (Celsius!) to maintain the entire interior made of ice and snow. Wrap yourself in a blanket and enjoy the candlelit atmosphere with a cup of hot chocolate or a chilled cocktail on the rocks.

Stay: Hotel Levi Panorama

Day 6: Frozen Adventures and Northern Lights

Greet the day with another ski lesson or choose to hang back at the hotel and go for a sauna complete with stunning panoramic views. Either way, be sure to rest up because the evening has an Arctic adventure in store, with a snowmobile safari through snow-covered forests and across frozen lakes. The moon and the stars will light your way, and, with a little luck, the Northern Lights may even come out to play. Indulge in a delicious snack of sausages and warm drinks around an open fire, contemplating how you’ll ever return to your normal life.

Stay: Hotel Levi Panorama

Day 7: Reindeer on Safari

Today, after checking out of your hotel, your driver will be waiting to escort you via private transfer to Rovaniemi, the capital of Lapland, and the “official” hometown of Santa Claus. For the next two nights you’ll be staying at Arctic Treehouse Hotel in a glasshouse room that looks as amazing as it sounds. Experience luxury with an Arctic feel where warm wooden interiors and Scandinavian design provide a backdrop to incredible views of the surrounding forest and northern skies through enormous unobstructed windows.

Tonight, feel the nostalgic tug of childhood on a sleigh safari, pulled through the snow by reindeer. Nature’s silent beauty will be on full display, and so will (hopefully) the Northern Lights. Meet local reindeer herders who will tell tales of Lapland life, and feed the friendly reindeer, taking a guess as to which one is Rudolph.

Stay: Arctic Treehouse Hotel

Day 8: A Day at the Ranua Zoo

Just a short one-hour drive will bring you to Ranua Wildlife Park, where you can observe arctic animals in an environment as authentic as possible, without being out in the wild. The park is one of Lapland’s leading attractions, home to more than 50 species including polar bears, Arctic fox, eagle owls, moose, deer, wolverines, and more. Learn all about the animals from the knowledgeable staff, who specialise in northern and arctic animal species. Gain insight into protection programs and endangered species and learn what’s being done to help. A day with these incredible creatures will leave you with lifelong memories.

Stay: Arctic Treehouse Hotel

Day 9: Wild Husky Safari

Your final day brings one more chance to enjoy the magical forests of the Lappish wilderness, with a team of huskies as your guides. After arriving at the kennel, you’ll be fully briefed on safety and driving instructions before you set out to cruise across the bright white landscape. Enjoy magnificent forest views as you drive your own team of experienced pups across a trail 16 to 22 kilometres long. Afterwards, warm up with hot juice and cookies, hearing stories about the husky farm.

Spend the afternoon at leisure before heading to Rovaniemi Airport for your onward flight to Helsinki and beyond.
